Not everyone has the money to spend on HD equipment, as i said - everything else has been donated and all of the distribution equipment is coming out my pocket...

Would something like the Channel Plus Open House H838BID Bidirectional 8-Way Amplifier work for me even if i was only using 5 of the outputs?

That's just an amplifier. Those residential modulators have an output of +25dBmV. You do not need an amplifier.

But would it work? I can get one for $20.00, and it has 2 modulator ins + a catv-in so i could wire a STB or ota line right into it.

It would work well as an amplified splitter - but you still need the modulator (I think you understand, but just in case).

Yes sir,
My plan is to run the modulator AND a coax line that will either be an OTA antenna or a directv STB to this splitter, and from there go to the tvs.

Thanks

I guess if you're going going to have CATV, OTA, or an STB in the mix, then yes, get that H838BID. Just terminate the unused ports. Make sure you do not connect a modulator to the CATV input. The reason is that the CATV input wants to see a signal level around 10dBmV or so. Shoving 25 into will kill it.

You're better off with HD locally than distributed SD. SD is a dead technology, no point in rolling anything out with it. Distributed HD is big bucks, so local HD is the solution for most. All the providers now have whole-house DVRs as well for that part of the equation.

Local hd is not financially feasible for this install, or i would have gone that route. Thank you though.

The STB is not going to be used all of the time, we have an arrangement with DirecTV for use during some yearly events (NYE, Superbowl, etc) this only gets us use of one STB. Maybe in the near future we would be able to do a correct stb install, but thats aways off.

HUH??? You have an arrangement? What? This sounds a little shady, as with a normal system, you could add boxes to support multiple TVs. Much cheaper than distributed HDMI, which is the big-bucks route.

Not at all, i do not need a STB all of the time - we do community events around new years eve (Times Square Ball Drop), The Superbowl, etc.
For these events i buy a months worth of access from DirectTV and a local installer provides me with one receiver (all legit.)

Yes, but surely you can get them for cheaper than that.

They might appreciate it if you actually did it right and did HD.
