I just had my Russound SMS3 hard drive crash and my backup ghost image is corrupted. Anyone on here with an SMS willing to share their disk image? Thanks in advance.

My SMS3 just died. It no longer boots. I assumed it was a hard drive failure. I have a back-up hard drive image, so I swapped it with the original. Still woouldn't boot. Went to Fry's, bought new memory. Still wouldn't boot. It may be the CPU, but I am done troubleshooting. My wife always hated how difficult it was to build a playlist on the SMS3. I just bought a Mac Mini, going with iTunes now. There are only two of us in the house, we don't need three different audio streams. Now I just have to sort out how to convert the Russound library to iTunes and keep the meta data.

Sorry, enough about me. I also have a 160 GB original disk image. If you still need it, I believe I have what you need. Let me know how to contact you, and I can send you the 160 GB hard drive. I used this image to copy to a 500 gig hard drive, and then re-sized the partition with partition magic to take advantage of the larger disk space.

What part of the country are you in?

@Postwise, thank you for the offer, I'll definitely take you up on it. I'm in Austin, TX and I emailed you to the address you PM'd me. Let me know the best way to coordinate.

Here's what the disk image looks like.

I copied the original drive to a 500 gig drive and resized the media partition to take advantage of the extra space.

If you want to send me a drive and a pre-paid shipping label, I can copy my drive to yours and send it back to you.

Thanks,

jim

I believe I can, I just don't have a way of testing it.

do you have the image on IDE or on SATA, I read on an earlier post that you have a 160 gig image I know I can find a IDE that would be at least that size. I can send it.
Thanks again

It's on an IDE drive. I think I can resize the media portion of the image. So whatever size you can send me should be fine.

If you know of a way to do this better, and you are willing to talk me through it, I am happy to try it.

How do you want the drive formated, or leave unformated?

Checking to see how things are going.
Have you had any luck putting the image on them?

I have a working SMS3 with 160gb drive Maxtor Diamond Max. I made a clone myself on to a Western Digital Caviar Blue 320gb and keeping the 160gb as my backup in case of hdd failure. A technician at Russound told me that the SMS3 motherboard only recognizes up to 320gb and so I would not try to use a clone above that. The cloning process was done using Acronis True Image Live CD (don't use from within Windows). Also do not use the option to proportionally size the partitions, but instead did an exact copy. That left a 160gb unallocated sector -- for this I came in again with Gparted and resized the media partition alone to take up the extra HDD space.

While doing the cloning, I made 2 more SMS3 clones onto larger disks and tested them too -- if anyone is interested in them please PM me.

After the switch the SMS3 is working perfectly -- now that it has tested fine, I have proceeded to transfer via network connection all the existing music files in the SMS to the PC -- this is music that came with the SMS I bought and I don't want it. I will now do a clean out of HDD and reset it to factory status with some (Russound tech support help). Then start uploading my files to SMS.

I have 2 questiond also: 1. Does anyone have the format or format instructions to prepare MP3 for use with the "HDD Import" option ? Supposedly this is a format used by ReadytoPlay and Ripstation, but I assume the mp3 format is something anyone can do if they have the specs. 2. Does anyone know how to prepare and upload Themes in SMS3 from outside instead of creating them one by one in the SMS user interface? Thanks in advance.
