Had this product been released alongside the EDGE, I would have absolutely gone for it instead.

As a current EDGE owner, it doesn't seem like much of an upgrade. I think I'll probably just buy an HDMI 2 > 1 switch and hook it up to the output of my EDGE to manually swap between the TV / Projector instead.

It still seems to be based around the ABT2010, so hopefully any improvements/additions will be brought to the EDGE via firmware updates.

I am curious about the trade-in program for VP50 owners. I skipped the VP50pro upgrade.

Based on the product description this is a VP based on an ASIC, the ABT2010, not an FPGA. Of course, as soon as someone opens one up we will know for sure.

So basically we should not expect better/other performance and features beyond what we have seen with the EDGE?
I wouldn't be surprised if the firmware releases for the EDGE and the Duo will be synchronised or even the same binary file.

The additional HDMIs aren't needed, but the Duo's additional analogs would be nice. Still, I'm not running out to get one just yet, though.

No need to be rude about it. In any event, I'm happy you're still around and I know it for sure.

Qs right Josh. You shouldn't just assume everyone knows it's you. He meant nothing by it. I still have to do a doubletake since I don't see that fancy DVDO signature under your name.

Maybe I could come up with a cool logo, add that to my signature, and be known as "The Product Manager formerly known as Josh@DVDO"

my take on the product is that it's a return to their earlier business plan, taking what they learned from the edge and updating their main product line with the results.

this company's target customer is a systems integrator, not the person who will actually be watching the video that comes out of the processor.

i'm sure they have enjoyed and learned a lot from their brief foray (with the edge) into the cutthroat world of raw consumer-electronics . they've learned about amazon. they've learned about pricing. they've learned about what it takes to field tech support queries from people who really don't actually care about video processing.

i think they've had a look over on that side of the fence and decided thank you very much we'll just go back to the old way we used to showcase our chips: selling and supporting rack-mount hardware for professional home theater installers.

DVDO makes chips. they can either sell their own boxes or license their chips to others. they put a lot of chips out there in the edge, and they made a lot of deals with denon, oppo et al. either way they're moving chips, returning value to their shareholders, life is good.

but if they want to continue to showcase their chips in their *own* hardware and still stay high up in the food chain (where the fat margins are), they probably want to limit their customer base to pros where money is no object and the tech support questions will be practical and professional.

here on avs, where we hear from so many *highly* knowledgeable video enthusiasts actually buy these things to put in their *own* living rooms, it might be possible to think that we are the target market. but one look at their web site tells me otherwise.

that's my read on the situation, anyway.

ps

i didn't think he was being rude. at least he took the trouble to insert an emoticon indicating he was only temporarily adopting mock-tough-guy voice

fair enough. i think we all know 'rude' was one word that never applied to Josh A, either in his official or unofficial capacity as DVDO product expert person.

I'd still like to get an answer to the question, for domestic consumers where HD-SDI or the THX/ISF badges are inconsequential for your likes or application, why would you buy a VP50Pro over a Duo? What is the difference between DVDO's target market for VP50Pro and their target market for Duo, is it just those who are a bit more cashed up that they're aiming at with the Pro? I own a VP50Pro (former owner of 30 & 50 also), but if I could wind back the clock to a point where I didn't and now wanted one or the other, which one would I choose and why? Assuming of course where I don't need more than 4 HDMI inputs.

When you watch the DVDO Cedia video for the new DVDO-Duo the REP point's out that the VP50pro is aimed at the pro installers market due to its Display calibration/Adjustments ability ..

I had to laugh when I heard the DVDO rep make that remark, wasnt sure if he ment to say Lumagen Radiance XD/XE ....,

Cheers....

And we are all intent on finding out whether Ken intends to deliver on the former Josh@DVDO's original intention with the VP50Pro....

Not to be a negative power here but if the VP50 did NOT deliver, and the VP50pro did NOT deliver, who is to say that the new DUO will deliver.

I did the VP50 to VP50pro upgrade. That is where it ends with me.

I have know doubt that was the case Josh , Its A real shame that DVDO Doesn't understand the importance and thus far clearly has'nt taken your position (when you were Product Manager)
that usefull" control's that focus around calibration is what the Customer wants & expects in A high end VP ...

From A company stand point like DVDO, A fully implemented CMS / 11-21 point Gray scale Gamma would be the strongest selling point, for customers to see the clear advantage's for A stand alone VP...

At this time the "Clear" advantages of A stand alone DVDO VP is just barely there especialy in the latest HI-DEF Blu-Ray era....

Cheers...
