Title says it all. I have a 2.35 screen and want to play Xbox and ps3 games in 3d with black bars on the side. I don't want to spend anywhere near what a mini radiance costs just to play a couple of games in 3d. If I can't do this then the next best thing would be a cheap non-3d scaler.

Can anyone recommend a used model to look for that can pillar box 1080p via hdmi? I can give up 3d but would like to still be able to play video games in the theatre.

Many of the older (but very versatile) scalers are limited to 720p and 1080i through their HDMI inputs. WIth your game systems I don't see a problem with this. There are very few titles which are actually internally rendered at 1080p. The majority maxes out at 720p anyway and the processor might do a better job in the final upscaling than the console itself.

DVDO iScan VP20/30, VP50, VP50Pro, Lumagen Vision HDP, HDP Pro, HDQ - - all with flexible scaling engines to do what you need. VP50 and 50Pro do accept 1080p60 input. VP30 and Lumagens - not sure.... All of the listed scalers are very fast with progressive HD signals.
