Just a hair brained thought wondering if this will work

Forgetting audio for a second. I know component cable is more than capable of handling the bandwith for 1080p. However, theres the issues with hollywood and such that limit all devices from outputting past 1080i with component. And im also under the impressions its not feasable for long cable runs.

Assuming you have a A/V receiver already that has component inputs (no hdmi), would it be possible to output from the device from hdmi, use a converter box to swap to Component into the receiver, then back out the receiver component and another convert to swap back to HDMI.

So basically in and out the receiver is a very short sub 1 foot Component transition then right back to HDMI

The general idea and purpose is for nothing more than being able to switch between different video devices with one A/V receiver remote

There is a device that will convert HDMI to component. Do an internet search for "HDFury".
