I am looking for a video processor that will detect 4:3 content and 16:9/2.35:1 content broadcast in 4:3 and automatically stretch or zoom as needed. Additionally I would like something that can detect side bars on HD broadcasted 4:3 content with side bars as "part of the image". Do any video processors or scalers do this reliably? The key for me is automatic detection, especially for 4:3 content on HD broadcasts.

I would like to see that feature too. My 2005 50" Phillips Plasma has that feature. I've yet to hear of a VP with that feature. We are considered the "unwashed masses" by the VP community... Go figure. We want to see the movie "Our way", not the way the "Director Intended".
My DVDO iScan Duo has a manual zoom feature. The DVDO Edge and Edge Green also have a manual, not automatic, zoom feature.
