Does anybody know if the Crystal Image Scaler can do a 2:2 pulldown on PAL sources like R2 DVDs? How good is the picture compared to NTSC sources like R1 DVDs?

BTW: The QuadScan cannot do a 2:2 pulldown even if it does a (quite good) 3:2 pulldown!

For scaling of PAL sources with 2:2 pulldown you have three options that I am aware of:

1) Faroudja
2) Snell and Wilcox
3) Vigatec

Also, DVDO makes an I.C. which does PAL 2:2 pulldown, but I don't believe they make a PAL-compatible iScan Plus.

The DVDO chip you're thinking of is the DVDO 103. Vigatec uses this chip. The iScan Plus uses the older DVDO 102 chip. This chip is not PAL compatible at all. If and when DVDO releases a newer iScan with the 103 chip, it will most likely be PAL and SECAM compatible.

Thank you for all the input.

I tested the QuadScan (2.06) with my 8" CRT at the weekend. The picture with NTSC DVDs is very good and has only few artefacts - due to the 3:2 pulldown, I guess. The picture is comparable with (may be not the very best) HTPCs.

With PAL DVDs and PAL DVB I had a lot of synchonization problems. The picture is not comparable with the NTSC picture at all - lots of jaggies and motion artefacts due to the missing 2:2 pull down.

I ordered a Vigatec VC 1280 instead.

If you primarily watch PAL sources you should really look for a scaler with 2:2 pulldown!
