I had a pair of Sennheiser CX300II's which I used to wear while flying cross-country at least monthly, and I used to even be able to fall asleep with them in. I have tried the Bass QuietComfort line, I have the Beats Studio Pro Wireless, and I have to say that a good pair of in-ear buds which fit comfortably can beat out active noise cancelling even on an airplane.
After maybe 200K miles, my CX300s got crunched by baggage handling and were immediately replaced by the Sennheiser CX 5.00s.
If you want to wear some in-ear buds during a noisy commute, these or the Momentums will do fine. I think the CX 5.00s are better value for the money; they have a fairly flat sound (a bit bassy, maybe), whereas the Momentums boost the bass more noticeably.
