Bluewaldo:

Which live TV channels are available for streaming on the Vunow? There isn't a lot of info on the Verismo Networks website apart from a screencap (mockup?) that hasn't changed since long before the unit's actual release.

I'm very interested in live streaming net TV, and an actual list would be very helpful in making a purchasing decision for me.

Thanks

i can't believe the pch-100 does not have an optical out, yes i know it has s/pdif.... but still.. IMO this is something that is holding both of these boxes back.... both of them are very close to being perfect but little things hold them back.

i think i will stick with my $99 WD HD i think it beats just about anything out there including a costly Media PC.

Vunow experience

I have just received a vunow device and wanted to share my experiences so far.

Firstly I got it to be able to watch some internet videos and my own personal videos on the tv. I don't have high def televisions and am not planning on buying them anytime soon. I bought the standard def box.

I was a bit worried when the device arrivedit was in a plain white box with no logo or anything. I set it up with my wireless network within 2 minutes. It was amazingly easy and simple to set up and get started.

The interface is very intuitive. It is easy to navigate and I like the remote a lot. Overall the quality is fine. I don't expect a immaculate and crisp picture. I have it set up to a 20 inch tv at the end of the bed and the picture looks about comparable to television.

USB drive: I like the fact that I can plug in a usb drive and immediately play videos. It has not had any trouble with this so far. I have not tried many formats yet but will update this post as I try more.

Torrents: I tried to use the Vunow to download a torrent file but was not able to make it work. I don't know why it did not work. I have been downloading to my computer and then using the thumb drive to play the file.

YouTube It is good being able to play short clips and checking out the videos on YouTube. I do wish there were more feature length clips to watch.

Streaming TV Channels: I have had mixed luck with these. There is a disclaimer before entering this section that all of the tv channels may not work and they are working on this. I had about a 50% success rate with the different channels I tried. There are quite a few from Europe and in different languages. I am hoping that there will be more channels added and the issues of the channels not functioning will be fixed as they go along.

Take this box for what it is a cheap way to watch the internet over the television. It has a great potential to be more than this and get more content linked to the Vunow box. For the price and the ease of use it is great. I am pleased with it so far.

I also just got one of these devices, the SD version. I can watch the Internet videos, USB stored videos (it appears that even DiVX works, although I have not tested extensively) and even download a torrent to the device and view the video download on it. The video quality is as others have recently described it. I have no real complaints there.

I contacted technical support regarding the ability to register the device (certain features require registration) and was told that this was not yet available. Tech support was only available via e-mail (not phone), but they responded in under 12 hours. Because of the lack of registration, there are no "rentals" available, CinemaNow or otherwise. Hopefully this and other features (adding Hulu and other Video and search sites) will be addressed, but if not, the available features for the price seem to be reasonable. It is a neat little device (and I do mean "little").

I had this same problem. What I finally had to do was use my computer to reformat the thumb drive. For some reason it showed that the thumb drive was almost full, even though it had nothing on it. Once I did this I was able to download torrents directly to the device.

swbonnett,

I would really appreciate it if you could please post a list of the streaming TV channels that are working. This information doesn't seem to be available anywhere, and VuNow tech support is unwilling or unable to answer this rather straightforward question (after four attempts at asking).

Thanks

Can someone who has the Vunow box please advise whether the live streaming feed located at this website can be accessed and viewed?

There are about 7 channels under the Asia cateory and about 32 under the Europe category. The ones from North America are CNN, MLB, NBC Weather plus, HSN, NBC 4(from the west coast, LA?), Allmusic, BYU channel, ShopNBC
Calplay Arts, Eastlink, LSN.

There are some better things to watch under the popular websites section. They have currently Cnn, Revision3, Forbes, TMZ, MSN, NBA, ESPN, ABCNews, PGA, DLTV, Crackle and a few more.

Overall after using the device for almost a week I like it a lot. This has amazing potential if the company is able to continue to add to the services. Right now the streaming tv and popular websites are a bit weak. They need more and quickly(basicly I think they take a site and have to take the movies, music, etc. and change it over so the device can read the information. Some sites have either deleted or moved videos which now the device can't find a play.

As someone else noted there is no way to log into an account to access any other services.

It is a great device right now just to be able to watch youtube videos, and downloaded movies/tv shows. It could be a lot more if the company is able to fulfill its promises of what is to come for the box.

I am having trouble streaming video from my computer over the network. It works from for about a minute then it just stops. Any suggestions? Anyone had similar problems?

Day one of having the box and I like it. It has so much potential. I hope they continue to update it.

I'm deciding of getting the VuNow but i'm torn between the "The PopCorn Hour" device. Is the VuNow capable of doing same thing as a torrent client on a computer such as downloading and seeding multiple torrents while an external hard drive is attached?

The Download Manager Release Notes say:

Simultaneous multiple downloads are not supported.

So it isn't going to replace your computer unless it is udated.

I think I would recomend the Popcorn Hour. The on-line content for the Vunow at this time is nothing worth having. The Live Channels are mostly all News feeds of some sort. The popular websites are 3 weeks outdated, so they are unusable for surfing for new/sports stories. The You Tube and Video search are decent. I don't own the popcorn Hour just the Vunow, but after having the thing for a couple weeks all I really use it for is playing video files on one tv with an external hard drive attached to it. The internal hard drive would be great and a way to transfer file from my computer over the network to the box would be great. Right now the Vunow is far below the level of the popcorn hour. My biggest complain about the Vunow is that there is no info on it. When I had a streaming problem there was no help on-line, but there are tons of people talking about the popcorn hour. I have e-mail Vunow Tech support 3 times in the last 2 weeks with no reply. they also do not answer the phone for tech support. If I had it to do it again I think I would have bought a popcorn hour for the support community. I ended up spending $230 bucks once I got an external hard drive, so the extra money for the popcornhour could quickly balance. I have also found software the supports streaming of Hulu and other popular website to the popcorn hour and nothing at all the talks about the Vunow and any support.

How strange - as soon as I posted that list, Verismo expanded the lineup of North American channels by an additional 29 (many of them religion). I'll pull an update together as soon as I can.

It's the link you are pointed to on the device under Settings -> Box Control. This shows up as disabled, but when you select it, it tells you to register at that website. I have monitored it for a few weeks (since I got the device) and then that registration link was finally posted. Between this going up and the Netgear announcement (using the VuNow box for their device), I guess we'll actually be seeing some new features coming up.

Well, I just heard back from Vunow Support:

Unfortunately, I'm at work. Wonder what's different?

OK, I get it, I think. It allows me to create a four-digit PIN "to prevent misuse of the VuNow POD", according to the v2.0 user manual. I don't really need this - so I guess this isn't a big deal for me. (I had never actually looked at Settings -> Box Control.)

That seems to be right. My reply had more of an explanation.

VuNow box has been enabled .

At present this features enables to lock the box and restricts others to
use it without your permission.

Thank You,

Another update - looks like they did some tightening up of some of the more marginal channels. I'll post the list at this address, and maintain it there:

watched a few hours of streaming tv and youtube clips. i doubt i'll watch much more youtube - there's just nothing GOOD on youtube, i don't understand why everyone goes crazy over it.

anyways, when cinemanow is up and running this PoD will have 2 good reasons to exist in my house:
1. umm...cinemanow rentals
2. UPnP. my fiance and i both have Nokia N-Series phones. sure they're over a year old, but they have UPnP servers built into them, so our 5 megapixel pictures and several gigabytes of music are available on our TV and through the connected sound system now. that's worth $100 alone. they advertise this feature to be used with Windows Media Player, but from what i hear that doesn't work so well. connecting to my Nokia N95, however, worked perfectly* and i'm very impressed and happy.

now for cinemanow (which has been promised) and hulu (which has been suggested).

*perfectly: well, the PoD crashed (rebooted) on me once, but i couldn't reproduce an error after that no matter how hard i was on it (streaming music while thrashing the image gallery).

overall: i'm very happy with my new toy. i bought the wifi dongle so i could move it to the bedroom if i want, but for now i'm on wired ethernet with 5mb/s cable internet (speedtest says 4.8). i HIGHLY recommend this product for anyone who owns a Nokia N-Series phone -- up till now the UPnP features of my phone have been completely unused, and now that i use them i can see why nokia worked to put them there.

Hi "nc-jay" or others,

Can you comment on the quality of the live tv channels, especially the ones from Asia and Europe? Thanks!

@kkr

'quality' has 2 pertinent definitions, in my mind:

1. audio/visual integrity: is the picture sharp, clean and sync'd with the audio; is the audio clear and rich.
- yes, for the most part. the quality ranges from "perhaps better than my normal charter digital tv service" right down to "ahh... well at least it's free". i'd say 75% of the channels are just under the standard quality i would perceive from my local digitial cable company. 15% are poor quality and 10% are very good quality (for example, the 'vunow demo' channel is excellent quality)

2. the content itself, regardless of how it is presented, is something i would enjoy watching: ahh... not so much. there is an asian channel called Film24 that is always playing movies. that's the best channel so far. these are all captioned in an asian language i can't read (i don't know which, i can't read ANY asian languages) but some of them have english audio, so i can watch them. most of the english speaking channels are either religious preaching (i'm a devout atheist, so i can't stand these) or shopping channels (QVC, Home Shopping Channel, etc) which i don't enjoy either. in short, the available streams are not enticing.

@kkr: I concur with most of bitflung's points. The video quality is fine for the most part, especially considering the fact that it's streaming over the net. There are a few exceptions - the Indian news channels are transmitted at a painfully low bitrate with all the jerkiness and blockiness that would imply.

Having said that - a number of services use a much higher bitrate and some are even in 16:9 format.

And I also agree with his comment about religious preaching - far too much of that stuff in the mix. However, the shopping channels are good for a few minutes' amusement (when the Japanese QVC was on it was in fact quite fun). And I have a long background of listening to and watching international broadcasts of all kinds, so I can be terribly entertained by a lifestyle channel from Chile, a financial news service in French from Quebec, an Austrian regional channel, Bollywood music videos, etc.

And the easy access to the live BBC World News, Al-Jazeera, Euronews and France 24 is worth the price of admission itself....!

Now, Verismo needs to *really* expand the choice of available stations.
