Thanks so much for all the work in this thread (and beyond). I've had the WDTV since the first day it was released and really like it, but very much needed network/streaming capabilities. I was looking at the PCH but assuming I can get this to work, I won't have to. Will be picking up a usb-ethernet dongle on the way home today to give this a try.

Maybe one day this whole project will turn into something the scale of XBMC

Thanks so much for all the hard work.

accessing and displaying are two different things. The ONLY reason you can view stuff with media library disabled on ext3-boot is because the operating system resides on the connected device that is implicitly never removed. I have ideas to get around this but they all take lots of effort/time and much hackiness on my part. Maybe I'll look into it soon, but I'm running low on time.

the background looks compressed because it is every firmware that wd releases contains less space for me to pack with custom stuff. Graphics are the easiest way for me to save space and they can all be overwritten easily with HQ stuff using a theme.

I`ve a question to b-rad.cc:

I tried your WDLXTV firmware from time to time. But in every release i tried i had the problem, that my mounted shares have not been shown in the video or musik folder in WDTV.

By starting the WDTV the IP Adress was shown but if I choose video or Musik the folder was empty.

I didnt have any problems with zoranders firmware but now i wantet to test yours.

I am using the D-Link DUB-E100 NIC Fast USB RJ45 10/100 (USB 2.0) WOL USB to Wlan adapter.

Is there any trouble in your firmware known by using this adapter?

I edited the net.config and net.mounts in that way, that they worked with zoranders firmware.

The USB device with the WDLXTV firmware has not been removed from the WDTV.

Thanks in advance

Best regards.

someone should compile and test
http://ftpfs.sourceforge.net/

ftp is also simple protocol like NFS but setup FTPserver is very simple.
only issue could be latency from ftpserver

if this will work we have CIFS/NFS/DLNA(djmount)/FTP access
and more come in future

Is there someone out here who is willing to tell me (us) how to do this? I really need help on this! Linux/windows doesn't matter. As long as it's explained on very basic level. It seems a lot of people are able to do this. I have tried some things but nothing works for me. Huge thanks in advance!

for network users one small information
this is very easy to add to WDTV

I have nice set of icons (freeicons) if is someone interested expand screen I can share it
I dont want spend more time this cost few minutes and few hours find wheather source

METAR data are generic solution for many users but I am using page parsing ( not possible use for other location)

also good source is TABLE from here
http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/weath...140&NOREGION=0

metar data string "KMCO 290853Z 10006KT 8SM TSRA FEW029CB BKN110 OVC300 22/21 A3012 RMK AO2 TSB30
SLP198 P0005 60017 T02170211 58003"
and decoder is here
http://heras-gilsanz.com/manuel/METAR-Decoder.html

users then can only find own LOCATION ID "KMCO" for example and script will generate page with images

probably I will create later backend on wdtv.org and WDTV will only fetch image and simple texplain data
whole pre-parsing will do php-backend.

Cia. I go to dentist ((

One feature of wdlxtv firmware is "mounting of OSD overlay (if available) at boot". I'm assuming you have to create "osd" directory on usb stick which is plugged while booting wdtv, but I don't know what have to be inside that directory or how to create the content.

I would try extracting /osd content from wdtv (for example trought ftp to wdtv) and replacing what you want with your own images.

Thanks for your reply droopy! I have already copied contents from /osd. After that I changed two images (bg and logo) and created osd.bin (mkcramfs). Rebooted WD TV with power on/off but nothing changes. I'll try your suggestion, not creating osd.bin but starting WD TV with /osd folder on FAT32 USB pen drive. See what happens. Anyone else with some tips?

nice one 3dxr

i;ve mod osd once again, this time i;ve add rss feed scroller i can;t make video but belive me it really scrolls

i;m using rsstail from optware package to get data from rss feeds.

i've also worked on a way to make better use of about menu (now called special menu) so we can asign different tasks to it

don;t worry about additional encoding, it is not lost just set in backbone script for special menu

now i am working on this backbone script to add all functionality we can, also i;m working on total redesign of main wdtv menu, want to make it widget style so anyone can arange it according to needs (rss, mail, weather, torrents monitor, etc).

from this menu we should execute shutdown -f now :-P
turn off device for ever and send
with hdparm or over /proc fs suspend cmd to /dev/sdxx

this is really missing on this device standby mode is somthing like de-activated video part only
and rest of WDTV is working... or working on lower freq ( no idea what this device is doing in stanby mode)
but start is really fast and usb devices are mounted thats not true standby mode.

resmuz - looking very good, are you planning on releasing your OSD mod?

Are you able to add codec and realtime bitrate info to the OSD (the one when you press enter whilst a file is playing)?

that do you mean under realtime bitrate ?
current video/audio bitrate value ? if yes thats the issue playback mode is not possible change without source code and decoding part in HW CPU is only loading data from file demuxing and fwd to HWdecoder.

Hey guys.
What about a mod that allows the right and left arrows to be used as a 'quick skip' while in a video file.
EG. Press right once, 'quick skip' 10 seconds, press twice, quick skip 30 seconds.

Is this easy to impliment? If someone gets this is their mod, I will be FOREVER grateful, it's one simple thing that is missing from my WDTV. It's on my old MediaPortol HTPC and I really miss it.

try add some icons and decode metar/NOAA data

Try repleace RSS icon on another screen with current weather icon (sun/rainny...) and RSS rotating text can be
weather information like temperature and humidity atmosferic pressure etc...
( this is only idea )

I hope WD will accept network features increasing value of this product
and open GUI for additional screens from menu not from submenu and open XML files concept for dynamic generating screens with scripts/or custom binaries.

its very easy possible only add few tags
binary which will be executed and where will be result generated and loaded after script or binary will finish job
and some time limits if script fail gui will kill job and return control back

Then will be WDTV most powerfull small device with unlimited options ( or course limited with CPU/RAM/visualitation limits)

WDTV have also one disadvantage Webkit is missing new generation of media players/centers should have HTML rendering engine its very usefull have all basic information (weather, rss emails tv programs movie informations on one non PC device)

Hi everybody,

I've been using ext3 firmware for a while now and I'm very happy about it! Thanks again for making this possible.

Here are a few questions/remarks:

When I remove my USB stick, it won't boot into the original firmware anymore, but I'm not too worried about that.

Also, I cannot mount anything other than the root folder on my NAS (Icybox 4220). Even if I put the sharename inbetween quotes. For instance, '//192.168.178.3/guest-share' works, but '//192.168.178.3/guest-share/Movies' doesn't.

I'm using a Nintendo Wii LAN adapter on 100mbit which works pretty ok, although it won't run the higher bitrates smoothly.

All my folders contain 'folder.jpg' files and they show up great. Even big ones, or weird sized ones. I've read people having problems, but I'm not one of them.

Finally, I've programmed a script that will read a directory and then query either movieposterdb.com or images.google.com to get relevant images. It is coded in PHP and requires some end-user interaction.

I know that there is also a webinterface to manage your shares called 'discows webserver 0.5' which runs on PHP.

Can anyone point me in the right direction how to add my own application? I think I need to compile a package? I'm on windows here. :-)

Thanks again everybody and keep up the good work!

PS. Can't wait to see those new features added like Weather and RSS feeds.

I always found this. Many times I've read that ext3 doesn't modify the original flash, but it does as far as I know. Anyway I'm now using WDLXTV.

Have you shared the "Movies" folder on the NAS?

I am also using a Wii LAN adapter. The poor performance is Samba/CIFS. I get about 20Mb/s using CIFS, but using NFS I get 35Mb/s or so and everything thing I've played works just great.

Hey guys !

I just received my WD HD TV, and now i find out about what you do.
Up to now, there isn't anything i really need in there..

But, what would be GREAT , is this :

The ability to access shared folders.
Up to now, i think it can only share, but not receive from wi-fi, am i right ?
I don't have wi-fi on my computer, and i won't be able to plug an ethernet wire in my WD HD TV, so if i wanna use the wi-fi, this is the only way.
Do you think you can do that ?

As i say, that would be great !

PS : i'm from Belgium, so i'm sorry if my english isn't very good. :s

I just flashed my firmware with WDLXTV with samba.app.bin-0.1 on my USB key. Do I need to now keep the USB key in the WDTV to stream video files via CFIS from my network (Dlink DNS-323)?

Also I'm waiting for my Belkin Gigabit USB/ethernet adapter. I'm going to try to set this up with my Dlink DNS-323 and Dlink DIR 655 gigabit router streaming with CFIS. I'm reluctant to use NFS with my 323

Anyone have any hints to make things go smoothly?

Thanks

let me add...

1- if I use the 720p display resolution, was the output 1280x720 or 1366x768 ?
I ask that because I worried about stretch, and non-sharped images when you're off natives resolutions. (mostly all LCD 720p Tv's has 1366x768 panels rather than 1280x720 so they suck).

2- Can I use (for example) my Ipod nano just to play an 1080p mkv? someone try? is that simple?

thanks.
