My b-rad, I should have been more specific.

I was running v0.9.1 of the ext3-boot firmware and was running into these issues. I've since moved to your latest permanent flash and it looks like the commands I'm looking for are available.

Cheers,
Adam

Dear All,

First of all thanks for this forum topic it was very useful to set up my box.

I have got my WDTV working with Edimax eu-4026 usb lan adapter and I was also able to mount cifs and nfs share (I am using Hanswin NFS - as I have Vista for sharing the video).

But I have only experienced approximately 27Mbps (using the described network data performance test described on wiki) to WDTV over my nfs file share, which - as I see - is not enough for smooth 1080p playback, the video after a few seconds (or sometimes after minutes in good case 5 or 10 minutes) starts to be jerky.

I am using "WDLXTV - enhanced WDTV firmware 0.5" and (right now I am not at home so can not tell the exact type but) asus rooter and asus switch.

My question:
Is there any way to increase bandwidth to get rid of jerky playback?
What is ideal bandwidth for smooth 1080p playback?
What is just the "good or just enough" for 1080p playback?

Thank you for your help in advance!

Thanks
Kiskakas

rathalian: Zorander wrote in release notes that there are some missing symlinks in 0.9.1.
mkswap and swapon are two of the missing symlins

You have to create symlinks:

ln -s /bin/mkswap /bin/busybox
ln -s /bin/swapon /bin/busybox

or use busybox directly:

busybox mkswap
busybox swapon

Hi all, I have a WDTV media player that i have now flashed with b-rad.cc fw.

I would like to have network support preferbly wireless but wired would do too. And i intend to purchase a NAS device.

I would also like it to have ********** support too, but that is not a big deal as i can i think have that on my NAS.

What are the next steps, i cannot see anthing in the settings pertaining to network settings and all the other bits that the enhanced fw does.

I am pretty IT literate (although not linux or programming) so if someone could point me to a tutorial, i am sure i can work it all out for myself.
Can i connect any wireless hub to this or am i restricted to specific models (this also regards to network devices), i don't need DVD support BTW.

All answers appreciated.

Thanks

well you can either figure out how to customize ext3-boot, since that is what it sounds like you're using or you can use wdlxtv that does what you say stock. I don't know about ext3-boot but wdlxtv requires a device to have a label to mount it using said label, no label and its mounted as its device name...probably the exact same with ext3-boot

audio&video is not handled by the main processor, so niceing them would have little effect.

well you mispelled two of the three, so thats probably why you didn't find them

I see mkswap and swapon and about 200 other commands built into busybox. You're more than welcome to compile your own busybox with whatever you want, but there won't be too much additional.

If you want e2fsprogs use Optware and ipkg install it

Thanks - another case of RTFM - I tell my users the same thing (sorry all).

One thing I've not been able to get past (and I hope I'm not missing this anywhere) is being able to turn a swap partition/file on.

The command swapon issues a 'Function not supported' message, is this because the kernel is not compiled with swap support?

If I could enable this then I'm 100% there...unfortunately having no swap memory is holding me back.

In that link they speak about user made plugins, maybe it could be a hint to start coding plugins for hour WDTV too (: ..

This was on one plugin (youtube videos)

Does someone think it could work on ouw WDTV?
I don't know how to test it :\\ ..

Shure there are some diferences, but maybe we could port something from the d-link to the WDTV, because it seems that they are building the WDTV in top of the d-link dsm-320 software and they disabled only some features, without deleting them! (you can find xmls for wireless in the /osd folder, and we don't even have oficial wireless support)

Hi
I have the apple usb ethernet adapter. Works great ! I can ftp and telnet into it and cifs is working nicely too. However as I am running vista 64 I am unsure if I can get nfs to work. I heard some people using vista are using hanewin nfs to get it to work with vista. Will this also work for the 64 bit version of vista? I would love for someone to explain what I need to do in hanewin under the export tab so it shares a folder and shows this on the wdtv with the files I can then run on the wdtv. Also how would I mount these in the net file using what command that hanewin will recognize? I apologise for my lack of knowledge regarding this subject. I hope someone here can clarify it for me and maybe if they have time show me a step by step tutorial on how to get nfs working through vista 64? I would be eternally thankful for such an effort and will pass the wisdom on to others who may require help of course. Thanks for any help!!!

Thanks a lot for the answer! You are the best!

First of all thanks the many useful info about the WDTV.

I have the same config here, just with 1TB.
The same planed combo: Mbook World (NAS) + WDTV (with Belkin Gigabit-USB to Ethernet adapter) via Linksys WRT54GL

In that config I have the mybook and the router. I have just tried the perf by running a blurayrip (720p~4-5GB and 1080p~8-9GB) from the nas to my laptop via wireless. Both work well. No audio/video problem. Speed is stable 1.6-1.7 MB/s.

If i calculate correctly, to be able to stream a 1080p blurayrip (8-9GB, 1:40h) i need 1.5MB/sec bandwith (9GB=~9000MB, 1:40h=100min=6000sec, 9000MB/6000sec=1.5 MB/sec). I planned to update my router to a wifi N, but with this wifi G config, it looks it is enough.

1) The only question is that if I stream that blurayrip from my mybook to the WDTV via ethernet and finally plug the WD TV to the LCDTV via HDMI (not yet either ), is the bandwidth enough as well?

2) Which is the best protocol to use to stream from NAS? UPnD, NFS, CIFS?

Any help appreciated.

Hey guys, newbie here, but heard that the WD dev person cruises these forums.

Gonna try the new 1.02.07 which powers down the caddy/usb device on power off later but wondered if it's possible to code the device to shutdown the GFX (sigma) processor too so that when it's in standy by, it really is, rather than still being warm and sucking on the watts.

A suggestion which would be good to have is when you select the Information icon when playing a video, it would handy to see a break down of the audio/video in the file and avg bitrate..

Great to see all the dev work going into this device )

There are too many libs there under GPL license, I'm getting really pissed of because open source dmaosd would allow us to do whatever we want in the TV GUI!!!!

If anybody has xml's for divxconnected device maybe we can check if they are working on wdtv? Maybe they did not cut so much or maybe even they just gave us simple GUI while dmaosd supports more complex interfaces?

Open dma320 can be downloaded here
http://www.pgt-linux.org/opendsm320
and the xml osd files are there in the folder osd/files.
Only problem is that dmaosd is specific for each multimedia box, so, they could have changed many things. The only thing we could do is investigate their xmls, and test some options that are not presented in the WDTV xmls files (if any) and see if it works.

Best regards

It's not the same as divx connected device. It seems that these xml's aren't more complex than these ones on wdtv :/

Look at setup_network.xml in both firmwares. They are very similar:

WDLXTV-0.5.2 is now available

Changelog

0.5.2
* based on firmware 1.02.07, ext2/ext3 filesystem support now official!!!
* more md5sums added for corruption checking
* a single custom init.d script can be placed in /conf, called S00user-script
***** syntax errors in S00user-script will prevent your osd from booting, be careful!
* crazymounts wait is now user extendable, default = 10 seconds
***** if /conf/crazymount.wait exists and contains a single integer, delay will be extended

0.5.1
* emergency flash upgrade/freeze recovery now added
***** requires a full firmware image called emergency-wdtv.bin and
********a file called emergency-flash on the root of a device at boot
* Custom background and screen saver images can be supplied at boot
***** requires welcome_background_bg.jpg (maxsize=524288) or screen_saver.png to exist on a device attached at boot
***** original screen_saver & welcome_background are supplied, in case you desire them.
* A custom configuration script can be supplied to enable/disable/whatever at boot
***** requires a script called S00custom-options on the root of a device attached at boot
* OSD overlays must be named as follows: .osd.bin example: myoverlay.osd.bin (sample)
* added another 5s wait for slow devices to come online at boot.
* no benign shell errors when booting on the serial tty
* reboot now sync's & (attempts to) umount devices before rebooting

0.5
* based on firmware 1.02.06

Be careful with S00user-script in /conf, as I say a typo in there will prevent the osd from loading. The proper route would be to get it working as S00custom-options on the root of an attached device, then when that works move it into /conf

if you break yourself with a bad /conf/S00user-script then place the following inside of S00custom-options:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
rm /tmp/init.d/S00user-script

First of all: Thanks for your great work. But I have got a problem. I have linux-server running a nfs-service, but I have to run a userspace nfs-service. And here is the problem: userspace-nfs does not support mounting with locked option enabled. Is there any possibility to mount the nfs-exports without the locked option?

Thanks in advance

Hi B-Rad,

I've not got a confirmation from this threads users and am hoping you can assist given your firmware releases.

Do you know if it is possible to enable swap files/partitions?

@rathalien: have you tried creating a swap file, then using swapon ?

@zoidberg: add nolock option

Yes I have tried creating a swap partition and file (both are created and initialised successfully via mkswap) however running swapon for both a file and a partition I get a 'Function not supported' message

Hi,
I have a really wierd problem with my wd tv hd.
I have ext3-boot 0.9.2 by Zorander firmware on q pendrive sticked to wd, i have also passive usb hub. To this hub i have connected wifi usb adapter and 3,5" 1 TB hard drive (MyBook with two partitions, 1 ntfs and 1 ext3). on my player i am running rtorrent (storing files on ext3 partition) witch is working very well for a while but then player is hanging up - i do not have access to it by wifi so i have to restart it by "replugin" power adaptor. But even after this operation something is not working - for example i can not invoke many scripts like ipkg, rtorrent and so on or even i can not access wd by wifi at all. To repair my wd player I have to format pendrive, copy firmware and upgrade wd. Which is very frustrating, and this is completely repeating problem :/

Do you have ANY idea what is happening? I would appreciate any suggestions!
THX!

For the first question: yes, using any modded firmware. Read how it works here: http://b-rad.cc/wdtv-firmware-dvd-enabled
For the xbox360 hd-dvd: I don't know, sorry.

Edit: I don't know if CSS scrambling or HD DVD encryption are supporte by WDTV. Surely WDTV can read DVD directory structure, but without menus and chapter. I don't know for HD DVD file structures or images.
