Yea I was going to buy the 470 for $229 but HP tech support was worthless when it came to server questions. They told me that I couldn't instal 1tb or 2tb drives in the 470. wish I would of got it now. for that price it would of been a good start for my media server until I upgraded to a 495. Dbone did mention the 470 was a little slow on some tasks though. Don't know if that would of effected my Blu-ray playback through a popcorn hour.

I will be on the look out for more deals.. Hopefully something comes up in the next month or so.

I also have the 470.

What dbone was refering to was the interface is a little sluggish. Doesnt affect usage at all, not even streaming.
What he did mean was when you click the server icon on your PC, it takes 20 seconds or so for the GUI to pop open. Same with if I right click a file in a folder on the 470, it takes a few seconds to respond.

Other than that it works flawless. Transferring files to and from are very fast, and multiple streams at once work great.

Thanks for clearing that up Dan.

I'll keep my eyes open for a 470. If I can get it for $229 that is a deal..

Performance for streaming through a PCH between EX470 & the EX49X series is there any big difference?

Whats the MAX ram I can install in a 470? 2GB?

the EX47x takes a single stick and I'm betting 2GB is the max - even if you could put a single 4GB stick, WHS is currently 32 bit (Windows Server 2003) and it won't see the full 4GB anyway. (Can't find a link at the moment). If all you're doing is streaming to a PCH, EX470 will be plenty especially if you put the 2GB in there - might be slightly gamey on BD rips with the standard 512MB but Damian could probably comment better on that than I could.

the EX49x would work fine of course because it's more powerful than the EX47x - more money too.

Pretty sure 1 stick of 2GB was the max. Sluggishness as Dan mentioned was purely related to navigating through the WHS console, RDP'ing in, etc.. I never had issues streaming BR to my HTPCs, PCH A-110, etc...

One thing that the single core struggled with was recording live tv (i.e. I had set up the HDHomerun with my EX470, didn't work so well). I wasn't surprised by this result though.

Cheers,
Damian

Yea I plan to only build this server to stream Blu-ray,HD-DVD's & DVD files..

The EX470 and EX495 can hold the same amount of storage space including external drives etc.. correct?

Newegg informed me they will be getting more EX47X series in.

If Newegg has a deal for $229 on the 470 again that would be great. Server and PCH for under $500. Plus BD drive for ripping and Any DVD HD software would still all be cheaper then buying the EX495. Think I might be set if I go that route.

What you guys think?

Yes. The 2TBs work fine though the reliability is hit or miss at best on those. 1TB is still your safest bet right now.

You will be fine with 2TB drives, but I would suggest sticking with WD. I liked the new Seagate LP drives (I own 1 1.5TB drive) but looking at NewEgg it seems more and more customers are reporting the Click of Death with the Seagate Drives. I have 10 WD drives (mix of 1TB and 1.5TB drives). I haven't gone with the 2TB drives yet because the price is still expensive ($199 vs $109 for a 1.5TB drive). Right now I find the 1.5TB drives to be the sweet spot until the 2TB drives come down in price.

Cheers,
Damian

I am fan of Sans Digital. Many MediaSmart owners use their enclosures and they have done an excellent job with customer service. I own a eSATA TR4M, just got my dad the TR5M for his EX495. Many members also use the TR8U

Its good stuff once you get it up and running. I had the EX470 for over a year and then a few months ago built a WHS (I am at 11.5TB and growing...).

You have media extenders already that you will be streaming to?

Now that is where the fun begins...

I have two HTPCs that are my main players, but also have a PCH A-110, PCH C-200, SageTV HD200, and the list goes on...

Another thing with the EX495, there are some neat features such as remote access, scheduled backups, etc... One feature I use a lot is I stream my music regularly which I can access at work using a program called Subsonic.

PCH A-110 is probably the player I will get. I thought about getting the C200 but I think the A-110 will be perfect for me.

That is a cool feature that you can stream music when your in another location. Are the features you mentioned only available for the EX495 or all Hp media smart servers?

Yeah, the C-200 is still rough around the edges (you can see my review here - http://www.mediasmartserver.net/2009...-c-200-review/), the A-110 is a good choice (I think right now they are not producing while Syabas works on the C-200, but hopefully that will change soon). I have no problems playing any of my media on the C-200 or A-110 (I use Clown_BD for my Blu Rays).

The features are available on all HP servers. Many of the features are actually specific to WHS, not just HP, although HP does have a nice software suite that they include with the MediaSmart Servers.

Cheers,
Damian

I haven't heard anything. My guess is that once they have the bugs worked out with the new Sigma chip that is in the C-200 I would expect them to start working on an A-120 with the new Sigma chip. I am running the latest beta firmware with the C-200, so Syabas has made some headway with clearing out some of the bugs but they still have some ways to go.

Not sure what I am going to do with the EX470. My original plan was to get it up and running as sort of a backup to my backups, but I will probably use my dad's EX495 for some offsite backup instead. I will probably just throw it on Ebay or something when I have some time.

Damian
