New price for a brand new ATV3 is $69 and it will be the first platform to use HBO Now.

That is a good price. I am hoping it is designed to get more exposure to the product before an updated version is launched, the sooner the better.

[Exclusivity] remains just a bit unclear to me. I assume they mean HBO Now will be available on all iOS platforms* ... and only on iOS for some amount of time even though they spend most of their effort on the "exclusive" part rather than "exclusive at launch". I suppose a month would be long enough to satisfy "exclusive at launch".

I had read 3 months on another forum, but I don't know where that came from.

Yes that's why I said all iOS devices which of course includes the ATV3. The ATV3 just happens to be the only one you can get for $69.

Have been using an ATV-2 since it's release, have also added a Roku over time, ATV is still the go to box most of the time. You will soon know why Welcome to the family.

1,100 movies on tap via any of my three ATVs around the house (and a ton of television content that's trickier to add up), and that number is climbing... I recently had to upgrade my 3TB external hard drives (mirrored pair) to 5TB drives.

LOVE my AppleTVs. I wish they had Amazon Prime streaming, but sending it there via AirPlay from my iPad works well enough, so no real complaints there.

The only major upgrade I can think of is 4K streaming. I don't want to have to use the television's massively inferior Netflix app if I have another option. But frankly, there's so little 4K content out there right now, it's not much of an issue at this point.

Knowing Apple for many years. I'm so sure they will wait a long time before they even consider 4K.

That's ok. My awesome 1080p HDTV is less than a year old so I will hope to used it for many more years.

I'm guessing the rumored refresh, some say Fall 2015, will include UHD capability.

I'm hoping there is an option to upgrade existing content when UHD versions are available, for a reasonable fee, but suspect there will not be. Unlike Vudu/UV, where having an SD copy made buying an HD copy considerably cheaper (and therefor emptied my wallet quickly!), with Apple content, there doesn't seem to be an upgrade path (other than paying for the new resolution at full price).

Here's hoping they prove me wrong!

What do you mean upgrade existing content when UHD versions are available? Do you think the studios are going to go to the expense of re-releasing movies just to upgrade them to UHD? I don't think we're are going to see much of this. New releases in UHD, surely, but not a flood of re-releases. Besides, as an owner of a 4K display for over a year now, I can tell you that the difference between up-converted 1080P and native 4K is not significant enough to warrant shelling out money for a movie in 4K that you already own in 1080p. JMO.

Well, they did upgrade most purchased iTunes music content to higher bitrates.

That said, I agree with the poster above that upscaled 1080p content will likely be quite good, and IMO, any upgrade cost for most titles probably wouldn't be worth it, for most titles. (and it's going to be a long time before there is a remotely decent selection of 4K content at all)

Personally, I don't care much. I own very little iTunes movie content. I prefer to own physical media and then rip it myself. I'd be happy enough to have new content... once 4K physical media is available. (hoping for sometime late this year for the merest beginning)

I hope studios will milk UHD for all they can, including flooding the market with catalog titles. But I agree, the big push will be for new releases. Which makes sense. Even with the relatively low cost of converting catalog titles, the lower sales numbers make it a commercial challenge.

Personally, I am interested in the improved resolution. Lots of 35mm film has more than 2k resolution.

But more important to me would be to finally capture the complete color palette and dynamic range, something that rec 709 cannot show, and that current UHD TV's cannot show, and that current 4k content does not use -- but that the UHD spec allows for, and that newer sets supporting the UHD specification hopefully will, as well.

My ATV3, especially netflix, seems to be very buggy over the past year. I have to restart it almost every day mostly due to issues with netflix content not loading such as movie art and search results. After a restart, it works fine. I keep it updated with the latest firmware updates. Sometimes when I power on everything I see the ATV light is on, but it is unresponsive both to my Harmony Ultimate and to the Apple remote with no picture or sound. The only thing I can do is unplug it and plug it back in again, then it works fine. Never had so many issues with my ATV2, which I still use today. When I first got my ATV3 it was much more stable. Any thoughts?

Might want to try resetting the device and then add all your settings back in. Not ideal for sure but it did the trick when I had similar issues about a year ago. YMMV of course and I've had only a couple failed automatic updates( updated manually later ) since with no other issues.

Adding rival Amazon is problematic but iPad and/or iPhone Airplay and Roku add Amazon plus many other benefits. I see a much larger benefit being Apple TV (an actual TV) as a household hub. There is no appliance more central in a typical connected whole house system.

For me I'd like to see an iPlayer app and more UK content. If they open the TV up to an AppStore model all that and lots, lots more would arrive. That would be the biggest thing for me. I love the Apple TV but needing to AirPlay so much content from an iPad/iPhone is a pain

Would current AppleTV owners be able to do a firmware update or would it have to be a new box?

I would guess a new box. Vendors want you to keep buying the hardware just like the iPad, Ipod, etc.

AirPlay is the ATV's strength. If they are indeed adding Siri, I hope it can at least control AirPlay (something it does not yet do on iOS devices).

I also sincerely hope that Apple finally embraces HDMI-CEC.
