Absolutely agree with this. For the few components that I have that came with CEC, it was turned it off as soon as they came out of their boxes. CEC causes more problems than it's worth.

CEC
Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) is an HDMI feature designed to allow the user to command and control up-to 15 CEC-enabled devices, that are connected through HDMI by using only one of their remote controls (for example by controlling a television set, set-top box, and DVD player using only the remote control of the TV). CEC also allows for individual CEC-enabled devices to command and control each other without user intervention.

That's the theory. In practice, it's a mess and you're better off with a universal remote to manage and control your devices.

I usually turn it off on my devices, but it makes perfect sense with Airplay.

Chromecast users can start playing content, and the receiver turns on and switches to the correct input automatically. With iOS devices and voice control, Apple is in every other way a company that seems to want you to lose the remote; CEC is a no-brainer for streaming.

Little Help Please.

I have a 2012 Mac mini that has a collection
Of movies in different formats that I like to stream
To my ATV3 in my bedroom surround set up.
I want to be able to stream from my Mac to my ATV3
With Dolby Digital (5.1).

I'm not interested in using handbrake or Pav Tube
To transcode the movies into something iTunes friendly.

I've been using "Air Video Hd" to do this, but lately
It has become buggy. Air video server is installed on the
Mini and a paid app on my iPad. It transcodes all formats
On the fly and them I use AirPlay to push it to ATV3. It supports
Dolby Digital too!

Was wondering if there are any other apps that can stream from
My mini to my ATV that can transcode on the fly and support
DD5.1?

I've found an app called "Beamer" and of course there is
"Plex". I'm kind of waiting for jriver to get all the bugs worked
Out their new Mac OS app.

Any Ideas?

Anthem MRX-300-Outlaw Audio M2200
Rythmik F12 subs
Paradigm Signature S6,C1,S1
Harman Kardon DMC1000 (music)
Assassin HTPC (movies)

Must be a mixed bag for some because CEC works great for me.

That was the implication of my post. HDMI is a "standard" and no vendor would say "My HDMI won't work with any other company" but that is what they say about whatever they call CEC (which is never called CEC).

CEC is by definition a vendor specific "mixed bag" where interoperability is a matter of luck.

Apple is unlikely to want to be a part of something that will generate unfixable support calls for little benefit.
