Airplay sends only the actual video to the Apple TV. Airplay with Mirroring sends everything that is displayed on the ipad to the Apple TV. I doubt that any Comcast ipad app will allow Airplay because they would prefer you to rent another cable box from them. I still think the native Apple TV apps are the way to go unless there isn't one available for for the live tv channel you want to watch. Good luck.

The more robust hardware should benefit everyone. I could not care less about gaming, too, but a snappier interface, faster scrolling, and the possibility of launching things via Siri? (hopefully with my phone, since I don't use the OEM remote) I'm all over that! It sucks that the cost would double, but depending on how things actually play out, it may still be worthwhile. Plus my sister has been begging me for cast-off gear, so I could trickle down my oldest ATV (ATV2) to her and get her off my back.

I'm particularly encouraged by the idea of an app store-based approach for the ATV, because then there is at least a slight chance Amazon could make an app (like they already do for iOS phones and iPads) for Prime streaming. That's the biggest shortcoming to the ATV, in my book, other than 4K, which I've reluctantly accepted that we won't see this round (not that I have a 4K TV anyway, and not that there is enough native 4K content to make that a huge loss). Yes, I can use AirPlay to stream Prime from my iPhone/iPad, and I do, but it's still way easier to have everything in one interface.

The only way I'll upgrade to the new Apple TV is if they don't release the new software for the 3rd generation device. Maybe I'll change my mind after the announcement on September 9th, but doubling the price better have more features than have been leaked so far. My only complaints with the existing device is lack of an app store and the antiquated UI. Other than that, it serves my needs for consuming over-the-top content.

Can't see what it offers to non-gamers for $80-130 more than ATV 3. Very disappointed in what I've heard.

I'm hoping there will be the basic buttons still, such that an H1 remote, or the like, can work it... I would find it a deal-breaker if I had to fumble around for a iPad or iPhone to work it, in addition to the master remote control that does everything else.

Wait for confirmation from other tech sites, there is nothing new that has been hammered around for months. The price points make no sense, and that's been hammered around too. While were at it, lets throw in the home kit rumors which used with Siri actually make sense.

9to5Mac has reliable sources for upcoming Apple products. There are some nice updates to the Apple TV 4, but nothing I would spend over $100 for without 4K support.

Maybe the new UI will be amazing, and not available on older ATV's?

Still, since I use a universal remote (so the new remote will sit in a drawer) it's hard to see that the hardware is of interest. So unless they prevent earlier ATV's from using the new software, the draw is minimal.

I was hoping that ATV would be my go-to source for 2160p, HDR, P3 content.

Apple TV owners' thread.

4K is not that important. 4K sales have not gone up as many expected.

Xbox one and ps4 just came out and they barely putting out 1080p games that keep up with 60 FPS. They won't be bringing 4K gaming console yet.

People want Netflix style now. You all are ok buying 4K blu rays but most people are not willing to buy physical media. That leaves streaming and every service out there are streaming compressed 1080p.

4K will not be mainstream for another decade. That just the way it will be.

Paying twice as much for the same video and audio quality is not very exciting.

Other tech sites have shot down a lot of this already. We'll see in a few days...

With Tim Cook as CEO, leaks about upcoming products are mostly correct from credible tech sites like 9to5Mac. It's much different than the veil of secrecy when Steve Jobs was running the show.

With prices of 4K TVs dropping like a rock this year, sales will go up and there will be mass adoption. There will also be more 4K content from Netflix in the coming months. They can charge customers more to stream 4K and increase their revenues. In my opinion, Apple will be making a mistake by leaving 4K support off the new Apple TV.

1080p will be even cheaper. Most people can't handle 4k streaming with their internet services.
