ah..finally...thanks for answering!

so iTunes does stream movies higher than 5.1 if you have a ATV4?

How can you tell which movies without actually streaming and looking at info on the receiver info?

I don't have an apple computer.

You must buy and stream on the ATV4 directly. You will see it in the info screen on AVT4 before you buy. You cannot download them nor watch the 7.1 version on any computer.

Yeah while the Apple TV is capable of passing through DD+, very little, if any, is encoded with DD+. Instead, we really want lossless audio.

Note that, even though ATV4 outputs DD+ on the rare iTunes store content that contains DD+ audio, it is NOT unmolested. The DD+ "bitstream" is actually re-encoded, meaning any metadata like Atmos or other stuff put in by the content creator like dial norm is likely altered or lost.

Lossless would be IDEAL especially if it is able to bitstream without re-encoding or decoding to PCM. I have a fantasy that ATV5 handles UHD content and lossless audio bit streaming, and I go broke renting everything from Apple even though I could have streamed it for free as a catalog title on Netflix or Hulu or Amazon.

MrMC maybe promising in terms of a KODI port to AppleTV4 but so far its buggy, locks up, etc.

Maybe cool? Sure.

Close? Sure.

Worth playing with? Yes.

Multichannel audio works great. Picture is superb.

If KODI can be ported to the AppleTV it'll make the AppleTV a killer piece of hardware. The only thing missing would be Amazon Video. I know that is not going to happen.

No transcoding with KODI. At least none I can see. No multi-channel audio issues despite DTS/DOLBY, etc.
