Improved PQ for AppleTV

Anyone else notice an improvement of the image quality of the Home screen and associated screens? Gen4 has been terrific out of the gate, but there is a noticeable change in the rendering, e.g., even crisper text and smoother backgrounds. I'm connected via Verizon FiOS 100mps matched to a Gateway Quantum router.

Perhaps Apple is upgrading the backend to prep for 4k?

Space | The Media Room: 10.5 L x 7.5 W x 7.5 H | FiOS 100Mbps Ethernet
Sound | 5.1.2 Atmos: Denon AVR-S920W | Pioneer A. Jones SP-BS22-LR/SP-C22/SP-T22A-LR | Polk OWM3/PSW10
Vision | 4K Dolby Vision/HDR10: Vizio P50-C1 | MS XB1S | AppleTV 4 | FiOS Moto QIP7232-P2

I haven't noticed any specific change in the Home screen or text, but I've always thought that the Apple TV 1080p video looked noticeably better than any other streamer I've tried, and I've tried just about all of them. It's as if the ATV has had it's own ISF calibration! All it needs is 4K and an Amazon app to be perfect. I know, that's wishful thinking about the Amazon app.

The screen savers on the atv4 are particularly impressive. But right now I'm annoyed that the tv app has stopped tracking the latest episodes in my watch list.

Agree with you about the look of 1080p video. It's significantly better than other 1080p feeds I've seen.

Amazon Prime TV to AppleTV

From Recode: https://www.recode.net/2017/5/5/1555...bezos-tim-cook

Quote:
The tech giants, who are increasingly competing for customers’ time, eyeballs and money, are close to an agreement to bring an Amazon video app to Apple’s Apple TV set-top box, according to people familiar with the two companies. Amazon employees expect the app to show up on Apple’s hardware in the third quarter of the year.
I'm guessing in tandem with the fifth generation AppleTV to provide consistent 4K/HDR offerings.

Space | The Media Room: 10.5 L x 7.5 W x 7.5 H | FiOS 100Mbps Ethernet
Sound | 5.1.2 Atmos: Denon AVR-S920W | Pioneer A. Jones SP-BS22-LR/SP-C22/SP-T22A-LR | Polk OWM3/PSW10
Vision | 4K Dolby Vision/HDR10: Vizio P50-C1 | MS XB1S | AppleTV 4 | FiOS Moto QIP7232-P2

I'd be in for this. Currently using an ATV3 soley for access to my iTunes library, and a Roku 3 for Netflix and Amazon Prime with DD+.

Issue arose with MLB app on Apple TV Gen 4.
Seeking advice on how to remedy/reset or delete/reinstall app (cannot find in AppStore).
In settings, we see the purchased app and a recent app update but don't see how to logout and re-login.
This worked last season, but not this season.
Any advice?
(PS. Last year, we could swipe down to get settings, but the swipe down function no longer works?)

While I would love to see Amazon Prime exist on the AppleTV, I'll believe it when I see it.

The timing target is interesting. I hope it coincides with some new hardware and services.

Right now, there isn't anyone renting recent releases in 2160p, wide color, and HDR on a setup box. I would be very happy to see Apple get this right. Of all the people that might do it (Amazon, Vudu, etc) I prefer Apple for renting online.

My MLB app is working fine on a AppleTV 4; are you experiencing issues with any apps other than MLB? The app is definitely listed in the App Store, so it is puzzling that you can not find the app. Perhaps your AppleTV needs a restart and logout/login of the App Store/iCloud.

Only MLB app. When we press it, it briefly attempts to function then returns to the home screen.
We tried restarting/unplugging, etc. and no luck. We will try logout/login again.
Is there a way to just delete the app? Then we can find it (you say it is there) and reinstall?

First delete the MLB App:
Quote:
Use the Touch surface to select the app you want to delete, then press and hold until the app starts to jiggle. Press the Play/Pause button Play/Pause button for more options, then select Delete. Deleting an app also deletes its data. You can download any app again that you’ve purchased on the App Store, free of charge, but the data may not be restored.
Then find the MLB App and re-install:
Quote:
Use Siri to search at any time. No matter what app is open, or whether the Home screen is visible, you can always press and hold the Siri button Siri button and search for apps by name, developer, or category.

Ask Siri. Say:

“Find MLB”

Apologies if this has already been discussed. I don't have time to read through 163 pages right now.

I get 5.1/7.1 sound on my 4th gen ATV just fine with Netflix, HBO Now, Channels and iTunes Movies. I've never been able to get anything but 2.0 sound on Hulu. When using my PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 I get 5.1 sound with Hulu just fine on lots of shows and movies. I try the same content on ATV and just 2.0. This was true with the old version of the app and is still the case with the newly redesigned app. Does anyone else have this issue?

I have this problem with my bedroom ATV hooked up to a Pioneer Elite receiver from 8 years ago (give or take) and my other ATV hooked up to my top of the line Marantz 7010 AVR in the main theater room. ATV Surround Sound setting is on "Best Quality Available" on both.

Marantz SR7010 AVR (using as pre-amp), Logitech Harmony One Remote
B&K ST1400 Series II 2-ch amp powering fronts, AV6000 Series II 6-ch amp powering center, surrounds and tactile transducer
Def Tech BP2000 fronts, Def Tech CLR2000 center, Def Tech BPX side and rear surrounds
Oppo BDP-93, Apple TV 4th gen, PS4, Rotel RCL-900 Line Conditioner
Adding Atmos in ceiling speakers soon

Pretty sure Hulu is only 720p and stereo.

I had it for awhile. It was stereo out of my Tivo and my 3rd gen Apple TV.

That used to be the case. Hasn't been for quite awhile. Hulu actually has some 4K content now and I am watching Interstellar on Hulu with 7.1 sound through my PS4 as I type this. If I switch to ATV I get 2.0.

Not sure if it's the PS4 that's taking the 2.0 audio from Hulu and sending 5.1/7.1. As far as I was aware, Hulu was all still 2.0 audio. I only get 2.0 audio on my ATV and my Roku Ultra from Hulu. When I view something on my PS4, my AVR does report 5.1 audio, but I'm not sure it's really sending it, as if I listen carefully, I don't hear much from my surrounds.

EDIT: Does looks like Hulu's 4K offerings (viewed via my PS4 Pro) are full surround. I have PS4 hooked up using optical, so I can only get/report 5.1 anyway. Any other non 4K movie I try, I hear almost nothing from my surrounds and all dialog seems to come from my fronts, not center channel. With my ATV4, set to Best Audio, my AVR reports 2.0, but this time dialogue does come out of center channel. With my Roku Ultra, it will report 2.0 audio from Hulu, but it can take it and make it 5.1(ish). At least it sounds the best to me. I actually hear decent audio out of my surrounds.

Not sure why you are even commenting on this since you stated you haven't been a Hulu subscriber since before they added 1080p, 4K and multi-channel audio.

Hulu is only stereo on every device at this time. Take this simple test, pull Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation on Hulu...stereo. Do the same movie with Amazon Prime
Dolby Digital Plus Surround.

"Oooh a puzzle box, I love puzzles"/ "Are you familiar with 'The Lament Configuration"/ "Actually I'm lousy at puzzles..."

I have a question for all of you ATV users. My concern is if we're watching PS Vue on the ATV 4 and then switch sources (PS4 or Tivo for watching locals) without exiting the app first, does the app still run in the background? I am limited per month by my ISP so any help would be appreciated!

Speakers: Triad Silver LCR (5), Triad Bronze LCR (2 rear), SVS PB13 Ultra sub
Video: Epson 5025 projector / Darbee Darblet / 98" 16:9 Seymour AV XD screen

Yes, if you switch sources without exiting PS Vue first, it will continue to run in the background.

So simply exiting the app back to the ATV home screen is good enough? If that's all it takes then I'm fine with that.

Yes. I tell family members to press the TV button on the ATV remote. That makes sure to exit everything.
