Someone else may correct me, but if you are loading up a buncha games and stuff, no need for the 64.

Corrected. But this is just "as far as we know" so far. That is certainly the way it has been in the past. One hopes that is true going forward.

My current setup.
My favorite movie review podcast, the Next Picture Show.
Don't suffer through Gamma D on your JVC. Optimize HDR Tone Mapping using Arve's tool & Masciola's test patterns instead (hints.)

For $20, I just went with the 64. Learned the hard way I guess. I should have little to no buffering with a gigabit connection.

ATV 4k 64 preordered last night at launch and delivers Friday sept 22nd. Already seeing the 4k upgrades in my itunes. excited!!
Shocked that the ATV 4k was the first to extend delivery dates. I would have thought the Watch would be the first to backorder delivery.

For $20, I'd just do it! I know when I order this I'll go for the 64....

Actually if you are loading up a bunch of games and movies, you want more storage. The more storage you have the more cache will be available. Having more storage will also help if you have a low bandwidth connection.

That was the question though, the movies aren't stored on the ATV are they? If you rent or buy one, its stored in the cloud?

I've heard that Apple tends to send the whole file down when streaming, as opposed to adaptive streaming. Not sure though. But even so.....with a fast internet connection, if you were using this strictly as a streamer, you shouldn't have issues with the 32GB version.

If you rent a movie, it will be downloaded to your Apple TV. When the rental period has expired, the movie will automatically be deleted. Apple is basically using an on demand storage system for the Apple TV. For movies you own, it might be partially downloaded as you watch. Your whole library obviously won't be downloaded to the Apple TV.

If you play a lot of games and watch a lot of movies, I would get the 64GB version. If you don't have bandwidth issues and mainly just watch TV shows and movies, I would get the 32GB version.

Yeah that's me. I use my PS4 Pro for all gaming. I just use the ATV like my Roku (Netflix/Amazon/Hulu/Vudu/iTunes/HBO/Showtime/etc).

I probably should have ordered the 64GB just to be on the safe side.....but no worries. If I run into issues I'll just return the 32GB and get a 64GB.

Nice, even though I don't have speed issues, I prefer it just to download. I loved my Vudu BX100 back in the day. Rent a movie in HDX, let it download during the day, and then watch that night without speed issues.

I'm sure the 32GB version will be fine for you. I ordered the 64GB just because it didn't cost much more but it's probably a bit overkill for my needs.

I'm not sure how Apple manages the movie cache but there are some circumstances where you might imagine they would use all available space. E.g. two movies are being watched in an interleaved fashion (say by two people) and they keep jumping from point to point in the movie. Caching as many movies as possible smooths that experience.

I've never done this (that I know of) but I might have conducted some goofy experiments. Or maybe not because I'm very serious and never fiddle around with goofy experiments.

Does anyone know new Apple TV will support Youtube in HDR? And I assume there's no Amazon Prime app yet with HDR?

I jump on this whenever it is offered as I buy all of my TV content through iTunes. I even have to have friends buy for me since the limit is $400 per person. Bought $1200 yesterday.

ATV 5 does not support VP9, so no youtube HDR.

I think the only boxes that support YouTube HDR are the PS4 Pro and the Chromecast Ultra. We have a Chromecast Ultra that we primarily use for 4k/HDR Youtube. One saving grace is the Chromecast Ultra is pretty inexpensive for an UHD player.

Well that sucks. I was ready to ditch my Roku Premiere+ box which does support VP9.

Hello,
After the new update the Roku Ultra now has You tube HDR. So does the Sony x800 UHD player.

I bought the 64gb because the atv5 is a lot faster than the previous gen. I don't have apple tv benchmarks but you can compare the ipad pro to the iphone 6plus and it's 4-5x better. See https://gfxbench.com/compare.jsp?ben...+iPhone+6+Plus

I can't find exact perf numbers but I did find something on a10x on a forum that stated ~700gflops (https://forum.beyond3d.com/threads/a...c.60156/page-2). I think that means it's in the realm of nintendo switch gpu power. Not quite to the level of xbox one. Still for a little fanless box thats pretty good. Hopefully people will take advantage of it with a few games here and there. If they do I'm sure the extra 32gb will come in handy. If not it only cost me $20.

Happened to wake up at 3:20 ET this morning and ordered the 64GB 4K and an iPhone 8. Along with a new MacBook Air that's being delivered next week, you could say I'm Apple's bitch right now.

Good news!! I can confirm digital codes redeemed via iTunes will get the 4K upgrade. I just received my Alien Covenant 4K blu ray in the mail and just redeemed the code on iTunes. It shows up as me owning 4K copy.

For those of you that have the Apple TV 4, are most of the HD titles now playing in DD+ 5.1 now (like Amazon & Netflix) or are most of them still DD 5.1? I'm wondering if the Apple TV 4k will follow?

If I choose Best Quality Available I see PCM on my AVR.....so it's hard for me to tell.

Here's Apple's article on it:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204069

I think it's probably one of the biggest disappointments of the ATV4 has been the audio. Because Apple insists on adding in their system noises to the audio. Hoping the ATV 4K changes things.

I just changed the setting on my ATV4. I didn't realize I wasn't using the Best Quality Available setting. My Onkyo NR-656 is showing Mulitchannel when I checked a few movies.
