This is what I don't get. I have the same show, the same two episodes, and the exact same naming scheme ('cept I'm using capitalization: The.Walking.Dead.s01e01.mkv) and mine were scraped w/o any issues. Why are we all getting such inconsistent results with the same hardware?

My files are all on a Synology NAS with a passworded SMB share, if that makes any difference.

Are any of you guys having this problem? If I go to pandora or to play some of my local music, stop the playback, and then go to youtube and watch a video, and then press the menu button to exit youtube to get back, the music starts playing again. Yet I haven't hit the play button or anything. Its not a huge issue, but I've ran into it a run of times and it's a little frustrating. It's like the apps or whatever you were doing previously don't totally exit or stop.

That's very concerning, I actually just rebooted to check for this very thing. I wanted to make sure they stick before I started making all the corrections.

I tried capitalizing it like you've done and still no joy. If the identify section would actually apply the changes then I'd be perfectly happy. But as of now the feature is broken on my box.

In other words:

In IMDb: The.West.Wing.S03E01 is Isaac and Ishmael, but boxee skips that and assigns Manchester Part 1, so every episode is shifted by one, and the last episode is duplicated.

Any ideas how to fix that??

Imdb is technically correct the way they displayed s3x01. Isaac and Ishmael was TWW "very special episode" following 911. It's kind of a throw in episode. I have seen it labeled as s3e00. Manchester 1 was originally designed as the season premiere and with the denotation as e1

On a side note. I'm so thrilled I canceled my preorder for bb. Glad I don't have to deal with all these problems that you guys have.

What is bothering me most is the implementation of the remote with the GUI. Not being able to see characters as you enter them for passwords is asinine. Not being able to loop around from edge to edge with the directional buttons (rather than clicking all the way back manually) is just absurd and needs to be changed immediately. Also, I thought users were exaggerating by complaining about the remote, but it is 50% too small and unreadable even in a moderately lit room. I would pay money for a larger, back-lit remote.

Some observations:

I can play Hulu videos consistently and perfectly.

I don't have blu-ray back-ups yet, but it seems to be eating up my mkv, m4a, m2ts and avi files with no issues whatsoever.

Scraping has worked better for me than it did with the PC software, but again this calls in to question why it varies when all info is coming from IMDB.

Is it possible to use a USB mouse? I couldn't get mine to work, making browser navigation a serious pain.

Right, but I can't figure out why Boxee is not seeing it, even though IMDb does....

Just noticed the Boxee Box ain't handling mixed 23.97p/30i content on DVDs very well, like is very common on ST:TNG disks. The picture "throbs" when switching back and forth, very distracting...

Before I start complaining about issues that i'm having with my Box, I'd like to first say that this product has a lot of potential. I think, even with the current bugs I'm experiencing, it is hands down better than my XBOX 360, PS3, TiVo and WDTV Live Plus as a media streamer. The interface is very user friendly and has great response time (unlike WDTV). Also, WDTV has terrible customer support. Its nice to see the Boxee Box guys are paying attention to make the BB experience the best it can be. Thanks guys!

Now for the issues...

I'm having problems playing some of my video files. I first noticed that mkv files converted from BDs are extremely choppy (more like a changing still picture every 10 sec while audio plays fine in the background). Some times the still images look all garbled (off color bars running across the screen, top half of the screen at bottom and bottom half at top...etc.). I converted them with Ripbot in case that is relevant. These MKV files play fine on PC and WDTV.

I thought my standard MKVs were fine (converted from DVD by handbrake). The first couple played great. Then the Box started acting like the BD files above. I went back to the ones that played fine to begin with, but they too were playing incorrectly. I also noticed that when I would change to a different MKV file (by selecting the back button and then selecting a new movie title), that the picture from the previous file where I had stopped playback was displayed while the audio was from the newly selected MKV.

I also ran the Debug as Eli asked while the playback was choppy. The CPU usage peaked at about 48% and settled to around 35%.

Looks like i'm gonna have to settle for some COD:BO tonight....

Just an update on my video issues. I tried ripping a DVD ISO straight from the disc (no conversion) using ANYDVD. It appears that my BB won't play ISOs either. I get a blank screen with the audio playing int he background. It now won't play mkvs (BD or SD) made by Ripbot or handbrake, as well as ISO rips straight from the dvd. These files work in other players/streamers.

Do I have a defective BB, or is this a software issue? I basically can't watch any video files that i have (local folders OR USB drive). I have also tried watching the straight VOB files created by ANYDVD.

Last reboot (unplug the device) I got a blank screen and audio. Now i'm getting this image file for any file i try and play (mkv, ISO, VOB folders).

Wont let me post the image file. Will post it next time.

another example of video issues. The right image portion is an ISO that was extremely choppy that was exited out of, the left image portion is the Hangover in mkv that is supposed to be currently playing. I'm getting all different sorts of playing back issues. Does not seem to be very consistent at all.

Let's see how fast the updates come during the return period and if they are able to fix these things without breaking other things before throwing in the towel.

After using this for a while, going back to the syabas machines feels like going back to driving my 1980's VCR. Sure it gets the job done but man is it slow, pokey and no extra features.

I just updated my C200 to the latest NMJ (their jukebox) and the latest Apps, much nicer feel, definitely not 1980's

When it's playing and all you hear is audio but no video, dos the video appear if you press fast forward?

A little more information and a couple of extra questions;

1. DTS-MA in an MKV definitely causes momentary audio mute when being bitstreamed to an AVR. This is random and not reproducible in the same section of files.

2. Dolby-True. As you are already aware, it is not bitstream but worse on some sources it causes the box to hang and crash. If you need more info I can get you media info of a file that causes a crash vs. one that does not.

3. Dolby Digital, appears to work great, when playing with this I get rock solid playback.

4. 5.1 PCM appears to work, but the volume is low compared to all other formats. Not sure if this can be normalized a bit in some fashion so we don't have to crank the volume just when playing these particular files.

5. I've said this before, but since no other media streamer company can get it right I want to reiterate it again, re subtitle support. The desired behavior by the majority of the AV enthusiasts would be that;
a. subs are disabled by default
b. forced subs are ALWAYS displayed for the native language even if subs are globally disabled.
c. if multiple forced subs are present choose 1st the one labeled "default" that is in the native language.
d. allow for quick selection of subtitle track from a remote key press, etc.

6. Which brings me on to my next question. You earlier indicated that a USB IR receiver should work with the Boxee Box. What model has been tested and what Harmony remote profile works when using this IR receiver? A lot of us AV enthusiasts have Harmony (or other) universal remote controls and really want to integrate at least the basic playback controls into our home theater remotes.

As I'm sure you know, the AV enthusiast crowd is extremely influential in the selection of these products. Get us the fixes and info we need to insure smooth playback experience of our local content and we can probably set up friends and family with these boxes.

Hi jmpage2,

Regarding IR - anything compatible with MCE2 should work. (these are the Microsoft media center remotes)

Eli.

Now I'm having trouble getting the Boxee to scan local media sources. I have all files on a WHS and it sees the shares fine. I add my movies folder and tell it to scan, but it never does. I go to rescan and still nothing happens (it says last scan was 08/04/74). Any ideas?

Please please please get the ESPN3 app working, someone!

Also, I hate the bouncing bars visualization on music and Pandora. Even just a full screen album cover would be better. Anything.

Your problems look similar to ones I was having before I rebooted the factory settings and switched from 1080i to 720. That resolved all of my video problems - don't know if you're on the 1080i setting, but if so, you might want to give that a try.

same here - difference from met_fan though in that my rez has been 720p since i plugged it in as my tv is 720p. maybe i should try setting it to something else, reboot then set it back to 720p and reboot.

My gripes (other than the well trod UI too many clicks to get anywhere, counter intuitive organization, local file ghettoization, etc.)

I got 1 out of 82 IMDB scrapes for my movies that the PC version did at about a 90% success rate, the 1 i did get was wrong. Without these scrapes my moves are BURIED but it is too much work to klutz around with the identify function to get them.

When I play my camera's 640 x 480 30/fps AVIs they look way worse than through my regular tv's DLNA share and the audio is ahead of the video by 2sec of more.

I can't play a DVD from a shared DVD/rw but I can browse the files and play some VOBs (but not all)

My BB account is the same as my PC Boxee account so my BB queue is cluttered with Hulu I can't watch but don't want to delete from my queue on my PC.

Too much "content" to little ability to organize/access it easily.

Does anyone have remote pairing sorted out? I can't use these at all at the moment since the remotes are conflicting with each other.

I read that Avner at Boxee said you can use an IR receiver for Boxee Box. I think some Harmony remotes come with one.

It's funny, I've read a few people from Canada saying none of the "online content" works. Almost all of it works for me in the Vancouver area. Did you check settings/General/Location to see if it's maybe changed to not your city. Also check the box that says hide content not available in your region.

That worked for me, I can play tons of stuff in apps/shows. In channels I see CityTV, Global, CBC, SpikeTV, Showcase...etc...
