This thread is only for feature requests for Boxee Box. Please be as specific as possible. This thread is NOT for bugs. If Boxee has a feature but it doesn't work yet, this thread is not the place to complain about it. Only post about currently unimplemented features that you would like to see them add.

I will collate them into this post of the thread so Boxee can look at them.
  • Local content management, use of local .nfo and artwork for local file database
  • Dim or turn off the Boxee logo
  • automatic screen fill option for non-anamorphic dvd content
  • allow GUI settings to remap remote control buttons during playback (for example, instead of up/down controlling volume, re-map them to chapter skip, etc).
  • blu-ray menu support from blu-ray iso
  • 'full' usb remote support including standby/power off
  • standby mode with fan disabled and lower power consumption
  • ability to mark apps as FAVORITE and go to the FAVORITE apps from the main screen
  • Skin support
  • .9 GUI re-implemented or at least an option for it as a skin choice from the Boxee configuration
  • artwork/title information shown for a movie when an info key is pressed (or the movie is paused)
  • true fast forward/rewind control for local file playback including 4x/8x/16x/32x speeds
  • shortcut key to return to the beginning of a file with a single key press (versus entering "0000" on number pad)
  • Make weather icon on home page selectable for full forecast information
  • music playlist capability, play back a playlist or create an on the fly playlist
  • Sling app for Boxee
  • Wake on Lan support, so Boxee can send WOL packet and wake up NAS or media server
  • Single mapped key stroke to toggle through subtitles, audio tracks, etc
  • Bring back left side menubar and all options
  • Various remote enhancements. When playing a file with chapters make right and left key press move forward and backward a chapter per button push.
  • use of local artwork and info files for media... local artwork is now working for movies but not other media types.
  • genre, etc, sorting options for media
  • cache of artwork etc to local media
  • scrollable/wraparound menus and icons, so you don't have to go back to top and start over again when scrolling
  • backlit remote available (as a separate accessory purchase if needed)
  • customize home screen elements, group items into folders, etc, for easier navigation
  • HD Homerun tuner support
  • When selecting shows > files > a specific show, the season and episode order is newest to oldest - as sort option
  • Music By Album: Album-title in second row is not showing..
  • IMDb rating (ie 7.3) instead of stars
  • Allow users to set their own rating for content
  • Being prompted whether or not i want to install a firmware update
  • Being able to manually adjust the cover-art for movies and music/artists
  • a Recently Watched list (+ option to clear list or delete items from list)

i think you mean non-anamorphic content for #4, correct?

scrollable/wraparound menus and icons - rather than stopping at the last item and having to reverse course, start over at the first icon/option.

bring the left side menubar and all it's options back.

option to keep scraped imdb metadata on nand, usb stick or sd card in addition to .nfo, etc.

Just adding to this, not only being able to use user generated metadata/art, but to also have the metadata/art cached onto an attached sd card/thumb drive. This should improve scrolling performance and get rid of the dreaded "Black cover with white revolving circle"

Cheers,
Damian

- Shut on/off subtitles permanently in settings screen (not having to do while watching a movie)
- Backlit remote
- Easy way to toggle on/off subtitles while watching movie
- Along with .9 GUI, not just bringing local content back to the forefront of the main menu, but also sorting local content by genre, having movie wall show more covers (I think 1.0 shows 4 x 2 whereas .9 showed 5 x 3)

Cheers,
Damian

Adding Wake On Lan support for defined networked media sources would be a huge win also - definitely a feature I miss since moving over from my Windows 7 HTPC running Boxee (which had a scripted WOL packet sent to my NAS on boot) to the Boxee Box.

I would like the ability to customize the GUI a bit. For instance, grouping applications into folders, hiding applications (I haven't figured out how to do this yet if you can) and so on.

+1 for HDHomeRun

Also, please create a PC tool to manage movie/TV/music jukebox.

To be realistic, I think it'll be at least 6 months before most bugs are sorted out and they won't even concentrate on new features until then. At this point, as much as I like the Boxee Box for web content, I'm thinking of returning my two boxes and getting the Netgear 550 instead, and as a fallback the PCH A200, or maybe even a HTPC.

Well, that may not be needed depending on what local convention they go with for movies/tv shows. If they follow the XBMC convention for example you can just use an XBMC tool

The ntv550 might be better than boxee for local playback or it might be worse. Thinking it will launch without it's own host of problems would be a bit naive.

I will add the HD Homerun request to the list.

What other boxes can use the HD Home run?

With the Atom CE4110 the BB should have alot of horsepower for that shouldn't it?

- Local content management, use of local .nfo and artwork for local file database
- fanart support as background when a title is selected in movie view screen
- artwork/title information shown for a movie when an info key is pressed (or the movie is paused)
- use of local artwork and info files for media
- genre, etc, sorting options for media
- cache of artwork etc to local media

the features that i want added most are the above listed ones. local content/fanart is what is going to determine for me (and friends/family who are also interested in buying a media streamer) whether to go with the boxee or the netgear 550. i really couldn't care less about the whole internet connectivity thing-- it's secondary to the ability to play my local files (in full 1080p and HD audio) and i want to be able to have visually impressive fanart/posters/film summary/year of film/etc come up whenever i call up each movie. obtaining this information should be a simple and straightforward process that a newbie like me can figure out. i don't want to have to go to multiple sources or have to get a degree in programming to display some pretty pictures!!

what i think would be ideal is if boxee supported Ember Media Manager (EMM). as far as i can tell, EMM is a free program that is pretty straightforward to use. i like it because it transfers posters and fanart to the folder where i have each individual movie and also shows the year of the movie, director, cast, plot summary (which is great when you want to give your guests an idea what the movie is about if no one has seen it), etc. and it does it automatically (which saves me TONS of time). it also sorts and re-names movies and puts the "the" at the end (ex. sorts the karate kid as "karate kid, the") which apparently more than a few people (including me) would like to see their media streamer be able to do.

EMM also gets images/information from themoviedb.org, movieposterdb.com, impawards.com, thetvdb.com, and imdb.com so it is quite comprehensive in finding what you need (even foreign films that aren't commonly viewed by western audiences). you can choose to let it make choices automatically or manually choose what you want if you prefer certain images for the poster or fanart (ex. higher resolution, posters from other countries, more recent posters vs. classic (ex. star wars)). if it gets the movie wrong when in auto mode, you can manually enter the movie number as it is listed on imdb.com and i've never once had it not be able to find the correct movie using that technique.

i don't know what the hell a local .nfo is, what it does, how to get one, and whether it's necessary to display the fanart/poster/film summary/etc, but i just want my media streamer to let me see these things and show it off to my friends! EMM support by the boxee box seems logical to me (and i believe the program was made to support xbmc, so i'm guessing boxee would be able to integrate its use relatively easily).

quite frankly, if boxee doesn't implement the above features, at this point i cannot see why i would choose this box over the netgear. i realize the netgear isn't out yet, but with all of boxee's issues, the netgear already looks like a better choice. please, please, PLEASE make it so i can add the pretty pictures myself to the boxee box!!!

I don't understand Brajesh (well, I can understand the returning Boxee Box part), your fallback is the Netgear 550 which has not been released and no one has a clue what shape it will be in at release It just seems like trying to hop on the next announced player is like farting in the wind, depending on which direction the wind is blowing you or the person behind you could be screwed!

Anyways, I don't want to get OT here.

Cheers,
Damian

I think that would be more on Cable Cards side then Boxee to resolve (i.e. Cable Cards only work with WMC), but would of course be a nice feature to have

Anyways, I don't want to get OT here.

I've realized a single box that does local content + web content, both well, isn't here yet, unless I go the HTPC route. Trying to avoid HTPC as it involves a lot of work from what I can tell & it'll be harder for the family to use. Maybe Boxee will get there, but they've got so many issues to tackle, I don't have a whole lot of confidence. As to "trying to hop on the next announced player is like farting in the wind", it indeed smells like sh*t around here as I think many of us expected Boxee to do things different than smaller/niche players like Syabas, HDI, etc. Plus, Eli's involvement in these forums and assurance that the box was in peachy shape elevated confidence. Also, before release, there was that Israeli home theater article about how well the box performed with local hi-def media files.

So, basically, I've now tempered my expectations. I have my fingers crossed on Netgear 550 because they've seem to done extensive beta testing & really improved their product before releasing it soon. I'll pre-order and try it out. If it does what the PCH A200/C200 can do with local media, that's good enough. If not, I plan to stick with the PCH A200/C200. I know Dune is solid as well, but why pay more. Then, I'll continue monitoring the forums to see how Boxee improves before jumping back in.

The HDHomeRun is simply a network device that streams 1080i (or 720p) so I don't think it would take a lot of horsepower. It should be no different than a share steaming... It's the software side (interface) that could get ugly real fast. Do you only support selecting a channel or do you go for a complete DVR solution similar to EyeTV or somewhere in between.

Initially I think having the ability to buffer and record both tuners manually (live with no timed recordings) would be fine. Press a button and say you want to record this channel for x hours. Of course instantly everyone will want TiVo abilities but that's not going to happen. Best case preschedule a recording via time and channel.

I have the same outlook now.

(1)My entry was the WDTV Live. Grew frustrated with the time spent modifying firmware, moviesheets etc, poor playback of high bitrate files on the network, and the lack of a decent interface.
----Found the dune players, but decided to wait for-
(2)the Popflop.
---reconsidered dune again when the Smart series was announced. Decided to wait for the -
(3) Boxee Box...still holding out that they can fix it relatively quickly. But then I remember thinking the same with the Popflop.

Hopefully the Boxee will not become the Crapee Box.

Options now:
a. Dune Smart (again!)
b. Netgear
c. hope Boxee fixes the problems.
Features...well I guess I would like

easily accessed local content, sorting functions (genre etc), improved search functions, skin support, local/network storage of metadata, improved remote..

Edit: Ember Media Manager integration looks nice.Just remembering every synopsis is tough once you get above a certain number of movies.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm even considering the PopBox again. They've got HD audio working in their latest beta, and if there are improvements in subtitle support and movie jukebox (trying to find out in the PopBox thread), it would be better than Boxee Box for local media playback. We know it plays back MKV and BD-ISO well. Go figure... sorry Jason, will try not to get off-topic beyond this .

Complete redesign of the remote, with a slider keyboard instead of the current setup (go with a remote similar to the Tivo slider)

I know this is OT but my weather icon is selectable and gives me the forecast, local weather vids and radar maps. It is one of my favorite parts since it is so unexpected. You have to go right from the settings cog, you can't go directly up to it.

I also say +1 for OTA tuner, that would really put them in the game. And since we're at it, throw in a BD tray and put an end to this PS3 v Boxee.

There is no difference in HDMI cables. If you can see the picture without visible dropouts or sparklies, the cable is working at 100%. No other cable will display a better version of that picture. You're simply wrong if you think there is a better digital cable than one that is already working.

I also say +1 for OTA tuner, that would really put them in the game. And since we're at it, throw in a BD tray and put an end to this PS3 v Boxee.

They just need to enable BD playback from a USB BD drive like you can do with the C200.

On the weather I got stuck in a loop the other night that took me afew minutes to get out of. It kept saying there was no more info for my location and then it would pop up to the section for me to change my city/zipcode. When i would cancel that it would take me back to the message telling me there was no more info for my location. I had to finally enter another zip code to get out of it then re-enter my zip code again.

So I guess for weather I would actually ask for an application, like weather BUg, like they have on the PopBox and C200.

The problem with applications is that if there is no way to manage how they show up, group them, or mark applications as favorites it quickly becomes overwhelming to page through hundreds of apps.

Then they should make a shortcut on the home page that takes you to a custom page where you can have shortcuts to your favorite shared folders, favorite applications, favorite music, etc.
whatever the user decides.

Ohhhh, maybe I have clickable weather b/c I downloaded the Accuweather app. I remember not being able to click it when I first got the Boxee up and running. That makes sense.

You can mark apps as favorites and look at them under apps >favorites, but it is one click more work than looking at all apps. I do like that you can make 3rd party repository apps favorites so they are easier to get to.

They really need to offer some modicum of UI customization. When I click a tab I should have been able to set up a subset of their tab-sorting options as the default for that tab. So when I go to Apps I have chosen to see "favorites sorted A to Z" and when I go to shows I have chosen to see "All recently added" and then I could have the option to go digging if I wanted something out of the ordinary.

But frankly, as we all know, I just want this box as a lovely front end for my NAS of media to stream to my HDTV. So I would focus my griping on getting the scraping right and the local file access customizable and intuitive and not waste time making apps or tiny useless embedded videos more easily available.
