Hello,
I`m thinking about buying Dune SMART D1.
It seems that it would perfectly suit my needs.
However, it doesn`t have a cooler and the case itself is pretty compact (which is a pros for me, actually).
After some googling and searching this forum, I`ve found some controversal information on whether the cooling is good enough to keep HDD temperature in the recommended range or not. Most manufactures of "green" HDDs set the upper temperature limit at 60 degrees. However, usually, it is strongly advised to keep average operating temperature under ~50 degrees.

So, the question :
Suppose that I will use 5400 rpm WD green-series 1Tb HDD.
Should I expect any HDD heat issues ?

Thank you!

p.s. Using external laptop usb cooler is not conisdered as an option.
p.p.s Heat issue exampel : mpcclub.com/forum/showthread.php?&t=25737
(sorry, i was unable to find an obvious example to reference over here)

Hi
I have Smart D1 with WD 20EVDS 2T inside.
Drive and Smart D1 outside case is quite warm...I think it's too warm.
Today my hdd broke down...I' m not sure what reason it was.
Maybe hdd was broken from the beginning...I don't know.
In the future I'm going to instal very slim fan in the bottom of case to enforce airflow.

My D1 will be here this afternoon. I have no experience with any of the Dune products, always used the WDTV Live and Live Plus. I ordered the D1 since it will pass DTS HD Master Audio and the WDTV will not. Anyway, I had some concerns when I read the specs and some posts on another forum. I will probably order a cooling fan to set my D1 on since it will be custom rackmounted in my equipment room. Cool Components probably has something that will work nicely. Need to check on that.

I'll report my experience, but I had not really planned on using an internal drive initially so might not have any problem. I have to play around with it some. I do like to set up "preshows" for movie nights and if I can load up an internal drive with movie trailers and intros, I might use the internal drive slot after all.

Cheers

Dune Player typically has recommended WD Green drives for the Base 3.0. I would assume this carries over for the Smart series.

Hi again...

I've got a new HDD (WD 20EVDS 2T - Green Power).
I think that such a small case without a fan is a mistake.
After 2 hours (idle) the case was about 40 degrees. The bottom (where the chipset is) was very hot, I couldn't touch it. I don't know... is it normal?
Now I'm thinking how to mount a fan...but there is no space...

I tend to over do things......

When I first got the D1 I installed a Samsung 2TB drive, the Spinpoint 4EG.
I felt the case was getting too hot. I was impressed that the dune easily formatted the 4k sector drive (ext2).

I removed the Drive from the Dune and also removed the heavy duty steel mounting tray.
I can play movies all day long and the Dune stays cool as can be.

I have 7TB of storage on my WHS box, and 4TB extra on a windows 7 machine. I also have 3TB's of usb on 2 drives.
I think I will just stick with attached, and network storage.

Thanks for the answers, sorry for the late answer.
Finally, I`ve bought Dune HD Base 3.0. I choose it because there are no cooling issues as it has bigger case and a cooler. By the way, I`ve turned cooler off and haven`t experienced any heat issues yet. Well, it is not that compact as SMART, but it works. I don`t know about any feature in SMART it doesn`t have.
Regarding NAS, shared PC folders, it seems to me that it is still a 'geek' solution. I`ve bought mediaplayer to present it for my parents, and they certainly need all-in-one system, that`s why HD Base perfectly suits my needs.

Have been using a Dune D1 with a 2TB WD-EARS Green drive mounted inside since Jan 3rd. It runs quiet and cool and even after two hours of continuous play, the temperature rise is not remarkable when I touch the outside of the case. No hiccups with picture or sound - this is a rock solid and good looking unit. The rubber textured remote is not bad either. I am running the beta firmware.
