I've got a typical situation, wanting to place some speakers at a location that I can't wire. I know there are many vendors of whole systems like sonos but I don't want to lock into a particular vendor. I'm looking for a simple open protocol for transmitting digital audio to play there. My ideal would be an amplifier with an ethernet jack that would just let me stream music over the ethernet. But I can't find any. There seem to be plenty of options for an amplifier with usb input, such as the Peachtree Decco 2, so in theory I could stream over ethernet and connect using usb over ethernet. But this seems really rube goldberg and I don't know that it would work. On the opposite end I've found that Barix offers an "instreamer/extreamer" combo that could do the job, but that seems like a real niche offering so I don't trust it. Also, I'd prefer the option to buy my own DAC instead of taking what Barix offers.

Any advice/pointers would be appreciated!

Have you looked at the Squeezebox Touch?
