I have a set of DVD jukebokes (7 players, 400 discs in each) and want to hide them out of the way then distribute video around the home (approx 7,000 sq ft) by wireless.
Excuse my ignorance in this area. Is this feasible today? If so what sort of solutions/providers should I be looking at? Is this at all standardized yet? Or are we looking at custom assembled solutions that will (shortly) be overtaken? How reliable are they?
You don't say whether SD or HD. The short answer is it's hard to do HD via wireless. A good place to start is smallnetbuilder.com. His rating of wireless routers and his forums should get you started. The most reliable way to go is Cat 5e. A second possibility is the new home plug units from Netgear and others. Make sure you get the gen 3 uints though. They are also reviewed on his site.
There are high end custom whole house video distribution systems that will do what you want to do but they will be very expensive. The easiest would be to convert all your DVDs to ISO (if you want to keep the menus, extras, etc), and host them on a server of some sort. You can then place wireless streaming players around the house. This, however, will take a lot of time ripping your 2800 DVDs.
