Got it. I need Marte to give me access to his streaming service so I can enjoy ScottJ's popcorn over at WynWorld's house.

Although not as exciting, it is also much easier to get around with the "Hole in the bottom of the popcorn bucket" at home than at the theater biggrin.gif

Any suggestions on a external blu ray reader or writer. My Asus blu ray reader (internal) is dead (does not show up on my computer) Look at this Samsung SE-506BB/TSBD. Anyone think this is good? Mainly going to use it for ripping with makemkv. Or should I go and get a internal drive and purchase a external case? Need a reader that will be able to rip fast.

I bought this and this and it has worked extremely well. Took about 5 minutes to put it together and to start ripping.

Ya, LG burner is what I use also. Amazing how cheap they are now ... almost same price as USB-3 External enclosure.

LOL I just place an order for the same external case, and was looking at the same LG in your link. I read that the LG one does not have rip locked. What is your rip speed with the ext case and LG?

I get rip speeds that are consistent with what is reported in this thread. Basically around 3-5x.

I have this exact setup too.

I rip straight to unraid server (cache disk) and start at ~ 21 MB/s. Speed increases as the rip progresses.

USB 3.0 and giga network from start to finish.

I never liked that case because of the fan. I used to have one but once I got several cases without a fan, I stopped using the Vantec. It was just too noisy with a fan.

EDIT: I had the USB 2.0 version a few years ago. It looked the same as the USB 3.0 in the link.

Mmmmmm I read some reviews saying that the usb 3.0 has the loud fan where the usb 2.0 is much quieter.. One solution is to not unplug the fan to the case. The case was just shipped out by amazon, will see how the noise is tomorrow

Nice, the LG writer is ~80 Euros at Amazon.de frown.gif

Stupid question about a discussion I overheard the other day: does having two optical drives instead of one matter in terms of energy consumption? Unless you don't read from or write to them, they're kinda sitting in "standby mode", consuming hardly any/no power?

It's not overly loud. I only turn it on when I'm ripping, I leave it turned off when not in use.

That looks great, thanks! I assume the case has a separate power supply that plugs in and it doesn't get its power from USB only, right?

Looks like Amazon also links to a newer 16x version of that drive. Anyone have any experience with that one?

I purchased the BH16NS40 a few months ago and have been very happy with the speed increase from my older LG drives.

Yeah you are right, just got it today and right now im ripping it to my notebook and its pretty quiet. The crazy thing is that its ripping at a bit faster speed compare to when the blu ray rom was inside my computer. (2.8x) I have a crappy asus (lite on) bluray rom. Glad I got this case, now if i need to use to watch a bluray disc I could just bring it downstair and hook it up to my Lian Li pc-q25b case. Thanks guys for the suggestion on the case.

Yes, it has a separate power supply and yes it's a bummer about the sales tax...

The fan is not too loud, especially when you get used to it. I normally turn mine off when not ripping, but lately i have not because I just dont notice it.

My fan started to rattle. I filed a warranty and they sent me a new one.

Frustrated.

It's getting harder and harder to identify the correct playlist lately. Using BDinfo, the last couple discs had multiple playlists of the same runtime. Then multiple playlists of a runtime just a few minutes shorter. I don't know which one to select. What do you guys do?

I usually just test each playlist out by playing them via MPC-HC. It can still be tricky if the scenes are out of order and you aren't familiar with a movie, though.

I'm debating whether I even want to continue ripping my movies; I am burning up hard disk space faster than I'd ever imagined.

Always check the Slysoft forums if you find one like that.

I didn't mean a link to the slysoft thread. I meant a link to a particular thread within the slysoft forum. I assumed he knew of a thread that specified this exact problem. Going on the Slysoft forum would essentially be the same as googling "moviename AND what mpls?". While sometime this helps, it's more hit and miss. There has got to be a way to identify the exact playlist that a dvd player would play.

What BDs are you talking about? So far I've been using BDInfo checking the first 3 m2ts of any given playlist of the right length usually did the trick. The new MakeMKV version 1.8.8 is set to select the correct playlist. Not on all title though and since there's also a bug with flags, I'm not gonna try it yet. Don't know how DVDfab does it but in main movie mode it usually selects the right title too.

Yes, dvdfab and dvdfab passkey select a playlist, I'm just not confident they are selecting the correct one. Looking up the runtime is not always exact since they round off. And there are multiple versions on one disc sometimes. There are unrated editions, extended editions, and alternate endings. "I am Legend" is one example. My disc has both theat ed and alternate ending.

Never noticed the rounding off and what is the correct playlist when you have several editions? DVDfab can only pick one by default and the you can use the preview function to browse it. If it's the right one, note the title number and rip that playlist.

This just occurred with Enders Game - AnyDVD didn't give just 'one' - it gave several and it depended on what disc you were looking at to try to determine the correct one (using SpeedMenu's). They JUST updated their version and after using the beta version (thanks to their forum) both the beta and now the new version select one playlist.

Good example. This was a PITA. It had several playlists for each movie time. And the movie times were all different by a matter of minutes.
