Well, after waiting about a month I finally got my new computer from Cyberpower. The cost of the computer was about $1200... It has an Intel 4GHz I7/6700K processor on a MSI Z170A with 16GB RAM and an AMD 2GB R7 video card. It came with a LG Blu-Ray Burner and a one TB WD Black HDD in a full tower Corsair Obsidian case. The case was a big mistake... I did not realize how HUMONGOUS the case is, it is about 24" x 24" x 10". It can hold nine 3.5" HDD, four 2.5" drives and three external drives. My motherboard only has six SATA ports. It has four USB 3.1 and four USB 3.0 ports and a M.2 bus port.

I think I will have to buy a new mid-size tower and transplant the computer.

In the meantime, I just added two five TB Toshiba HDD, another LG optical Blu-Ray drive and a 480GB Sandisk Ultra II SSD as a boot drive. I cannot believe how fast this PC is... My old I7/920 processor would convert a Blu-Ray in about 60-65 minutes using Handbrake. The same movie now converts in 20 minutes, a good 300% increase in speed. I'm in heaven....

The site is still down but I found the key from a cached version of the website. I tried using it but it didn't work. Maybe that's because the website is down and the software is unable to phone home to verify the code?

"The current beta key is Code:

Do either of you have the .exe you could PM me or know of a place I can get it. I mistakenly deleted the old version first before I noticed the site was down.

Thanks

Interesting. I can't remember the last time I put the beta key in MakeMKV. I just used it to process the episodes on a DVD. In the About box, it lists my License type = freeware and the register dialog box where the beta key goes is blank. It's usually not blank but contains a beta key. Curious.

It works just fine.

Thanks. I'll think you can still rip for 30 days without a key on a new install. Giving it a shot now.

Well that explains it. I only use MakeMKV for DVD's and Clown_BD for BluRay.

Mine hasn't been working for a few days now, about the 28th or so, and that beta key should've worked until then. And then the new one didn't work either. And now the sites down... Man that would suck if it was just gone with no more support for it. I put a lot of work into my code to work with Makemkv.

I used MakeMKV yesterday, saw that there was a new version 1.9.6, installed it and used it with no problem - says it expires 23Dec...

They must have fixed things then. The key they had posted for makeMKV wouldn't work with the newer version. I had to install the older version for the key to work.

EDIT: Although I just tried the makeMKV site. Did something happen to it? I can't get to it.

I've never had to enter a key when updating versions, just once in a great while when the old version expires and there's no new one yet...

I've always needed to enter a new key on the four machines I run makeMKV on. The keys were only valid for 60 days.

The new one was there a few days ago but it didn't work right with the newer version. Even though it was supposed to be valid until December.

Another work around for the key that showed up in October is to temporarily change your date to September 29th or a little earlier. With September 29th it will show that it is on the last day of evaluation. It expired on the 30th.

I've been busy the past few days trying to figure this out. The first thing I realized was that my external reader was a bottleneck, reading max at 2X. I spent $90 on it from Newegg - from a company called Archgon.

Anyway, things have improved since I got the new LG BE14NU40 reader. I don't have an internal CD/DVD drive (it's the late 2013 Mac Pro), so didn't want to spend another $100 getting a blank enclosure and a bare drive.

Initially I was still getting slow reads (at least I thought so). I thought it was riplocked (had to read up about this). Then I ran a readtest with Optic Drive's CD SPeed test which gives a number of 7.6X for DL disk (Avengers) and 11.3X for SL disk (Walking Tall). This suggests that the disk is not riplocked. Anyway, I tried to flash the new firmware released last week but the drive seems to have a version number higher than that already (at least according to the flashing program).

So I ran some tests on the same disk (Marvels Avengers - dual layer BD, 2 hrs 22 mts length). I chose this because this is the reference disk on DVDFab's site (see attached image again).

Fullcopy (Clone) with DVDFab: 32 minutes (max read 22MB/s and file size 46G)
Full copy (backup) with MakeMKV: 50 mts, max read rate 5.7X
Fullcopy (clone) with DVDFab on a Windows 8.1 laptop with CUDA etc: 39 mts (there is really no benefit of the CUDA and Intelsync when you just do a clone I guess)

Copy to BD25 ISO from Disk: 52 mts, max read rate 17mb/s, file size 24G (suggests it takes longer to make a BD25 copy as it involves compression).

Now for ISO to MP4 conversion times: Same disk (Avengers);

BD50 ISO to iPad air (1900x1080) MP4 = 35 mts - 5.2GB
BD50 ISO to iPad air at low res (840x400) = 30 mts - 1.2GB
BD25 ISO to 840x400 = 30 mts - 1.07GB

Since the Mac cannot use the hardware in its GPU, the conversion times are much slower than the 9 or 10 mts quoted on the DVDfab site. I am not even getting the software alone time of 24 mts for the conversion.

Sadly, the program also seems to be very slow in ripping DVDs. I am getting 45 mts for a DL 8 G DVD for a straight ISO.

I have tried Leawo, Pavtube, AnyDVD (very clunky interface), either directly on the Mac or on Win 7 via VMWare Fusion (or even my office laptop with Win8). Nothing beats DVDFab overall , but I am still bummed by the lack of hardware support. It is also quirky, some disks it will take several hours to rip. MakeMKV is more consistent but does not do ISO and is slower than DVD for a full copy.

Here it is again, the reference times from DVDFab's website.
I'm new to this and have a Mac and an LG Blu Ray burner. IS DVDFAB (BLu Ray version), the current best interface to make the Demo Discs here on AVS? OR Toast?

Also, to store large raw photos?

Thanks!

It's back!! Wine of the Week! This week the Catalunyan Equilibrista. I wonderful, full bodied blend from Spain that drinks at twice the price. Tried a bottle and bought a case! Priced right! $28

Weird - maybe because I'm still on Win7, though I don't know why that would matter? When I start it up and it displays the "new version available" message I just click the link, use the "download makemkv for windows" button, and execute the installer. It tells me to close makemkv, asks if I want to remove the old version, installs the new one and it's ready to go. The 23Dec date for 1.9.6 would be about 85 days...

Edit> maybe 90 days - it might have been released for a few days before I saw it.

I would say maybe every 4th version or so one will expire before a new one is out - that's the only time I ever need to scrounge up the key...

I'm getting weird error messages when I try to connect to makemkv.com -- the kind you get when a site doesn't exist.

This is not the first time makemkv.com has gone off the air for days. A couple years ago they were taken down by their ISP for some reason. Just keep fingers crossed that this is not an MPAA takedown. There is nothing recent in Google about a MakeMKV takedown.

Some how DVDFab figured out a way to skirt the court's decision. Given the way everything about it now redirects to the servers based obviously NOT in the US that might have something to do with the legal hair splitting that was forced on DVDFab by the court.

DVDFab has never clarified how they went from "You can't" to "You can" no matter where you live.

Could be MakeMKV is feeling heat as noted.

I'm not a big fan of the way DVDFab does some stuff but it at least works for the most part and is available to archive our blurays in the US.

Seems to me that if it goes down for legal reasons there may not be any good alternatives?

Is there any program that will convert an ISO to .MKV uncompressed with Advanced Audio Formats intact like MakeMKV did it naturally from a BD Disk?
