True, it is not difficult. But it does require that the manufacturer buy the license, which many are unwilling to do.

its funny that always xmbc users say that hd audio its overrated , anyway for me it its important and no mlpcm is not the same, it is for sure more important then any UI, but also as I said the administration is also important, I won't have again the hassle so xbmc is no option for me, maybe when it will be available on a mediaplayer then I will think again about it, but again only when it supports the same as current mediaplayers, I think that won't be so soon because many is not possible like bd with java menu, or 3D BD, HD Audio,....... and no XBMC with Windows is also no option

Unless there is some serious flaw in the player hardware, decoding HD streams to mlcpm is not difficult (unlike audio conversion requiring a decent DAC).

Exactly. First off you have to trust that the manufacturer purchases the proper license. Even then there is no guarantee depending on what you are using. For example, if you have an HTPC unless you enable WASAPI exclusive you will not get bit perfect LPCM. For media players there are quite a few that will either not downmix, will downmix only to 2.0 LPCM, or will only downmix the core audio. Too many variables for my taste, and with bitstreaming HD Audio I know for sure I am getting the untouched audio track

Cheers,
Damian

So this one will have app support- that will differentiate it between Dune's 101/301 player, but I guess it's safe to assume no Netflix (since the original Popbox never had it)?

XBOX Live: Wagmman
PSN: Wagg
BFBC2: Wagman
Steam: Wag

No expectation of Netflix, at least not initially

Yes. Here's Werner's reply to my question about U.S. availability. I don't see why they don't want to do a global launch; why deprive themselves of any sales?! This is a niche market as it is.

Is anyone here from Europe that knows about retail and electronics consumer laws/policy?

The reason why I'm asking is that it seems like now most new electronics are being launched in Europe first like smart phones, media players, and tablets...

Is it because they are more warming towards products not completely market ready - to make sure products are mature with firmware upgrades until the products are satisfying enough for USA Consumers before USA Launch? (Because USA Consumers have 30 days to return)

Or is the Economy in Europe better than the USA?

We used to get the fun stuff first...

Cheers!

So in Europe we are not allowed to get something before the U.S.
i think Europe has harder law then U.S. we can Return a device 2 years if it doesn't do what was advertised.
I think Europe market is bigger when it comes to mediaplayers, maybe it is because our TV Stations suck? or it is because we don't have services like netflix, vudu or hulu or whatever they are called? Maybe it is also a reason because without netflix inside all U.S. would start bitching about that, think back about the popbox release.
Popbox was first a U.S. only device and the v8 is now a europe first device, so i think it is just fair :P, let us be also one time the first ones, we don't get often something before the U.S..

Is Syabas sending you this for review? Given you're U.S.-based, I wonder if PopBox v8's U.S. release is imminent if it ends up getting good reviews. I know Werner has stated no U.S. plans yet, but who knows what they're really thinking.

Yes, for review. I have spoken with Werner in the past on the nmt forums

Well, in all fairness mediasmartserver.net does actually have a lot of European users/readers (UK, Netherlands, and Germany being the most frequent areas), so I wouldn't necessarily read too much into it. However, this could be a good way to get some exposure in the states and then decide where to go next.

Cheers,
Damian

The reason could be as simple as the exchange-rate.

Europe to start. Syabas will then monitor how it does in Europe to then decide if it will make its way to the states as well

You said earlier in the thread it would hit the States within the month, that's why I'm confused.

That's why I said I'll probably have a Dune 101 before the V8 even hits US retail.

Sorry for the confusion, EU only to start

Also, I wouldn't count too much on the Dune 101, I just got some details on, either later today or tomorrow I will post about.

The Sigma 8671 @ 700MHz with Floating Point Co-Processor seems to be only a bit faster than the Sigma 8643/8642@ 667MHz

The Popbox V8 has
256MB DDR2 DRAM, 256MB NAND FLASH
which is fewer RAM than the Popcorn A-200/210 (512MB DDR2)

I'm curious to see what is new on this chipset... so if Damien can get his review by this weekend I can read it while I enjoy my mimosa...

Cheers!

i think it is more budget if you look at the sigma chip infos, according to them it is faster then 8642/3, anyway i think it is just for a different market , i am more interested if someone really will come out with a 8646/7 solution, because the 8910 seems to be still far away, so it is more a 2012 product.

Well there also seems to be a more liberal attitude towards dubiously sourced media, legal streaming of TV shows, etc... It certainly isn't because the economy is great. BBC and ITV in the UK seem produce excellent TV.
The US has very restrictive digital content laws. That probably has some effect when it comes to selling media players, smart TV's and so on ... The Far East, in fact, seems to have the most variety of media players and I don't think it is a coincidence that copyright issues are not quite as important in that area of the world at this time.

Sorry about that, got crushed at work. Still aiming to have a post by EOD today. Looks like the 101 will not support BD ISO or folder structure support, and most likely no support for HD Audio

Sounds like several steps backwards. We need a new gen of media players already! ...ones that do more, not less.
