Does this require DLNA drives or can any SMB mounted drives work?

How many USB 3 ports do they have?

Does it support DTS MA HD Audio or sending the raw streams to AVRs over HDMI?

1. Works as DLNA client, or using SMB or NFS shares.
2. Zero. Two USB-2 ports.
3. DTS-HD and True-HD pass through to AVR over HDMI.

How to choose a WDLive?

I was going to ask why people refer to WDLive SMP but then I figured that was just short for Streaming Media Player ... but I see just about everyone talking about the SMP like that's some particular model.

Also, I see several models.... I want one, but I want a good one ... how do you choose one of these. (I've never had one before.)

Somebody posted a list of the generations but I can't remember where it is.
In a nutshell:
There was the WDTV Live
followed by the WDTV Live plus
followed by the WDTV Live streaming media player = WDTV Live-SMP (WDBHG70000NBK)
which was just recently replaced by the WDTV (WDBYMN0000NBK)

If you look at the literature I just linked and read the WDTV thread you will see that the only substantial differences between the last two models is that the WDTV Live-SMP has a Netflix client and the WDTV does not. Also, the new WDTV has the UI of the WDTV Play (which is primarily a poor-man's RoKu Internet streamer and not to be confused with a full-function local media player). The hardware appears to be identical which has people scratching their heads.

You can buy either the Live-SMP or the WDTV and get the same unit with or without Netflix. The Live-SMP has had a good run with 16 firmware updates but is now at end-of-life and probably won't see another FW update -- I have several of them. If you don't need Netflix, go with the newest WDTV model which basically picks up where the Live-SMP left off and starts the FW update cycle all over again. Amazon is recently selling it for $80 which is less than they are selling the Live-SMP for. If you want Netflix or want to buy a cheaper refurb, go with the Live-SMP before they are all gone.

Cool

Thanks! That's useful. I hate Netflix. (I used to love them but right around the Quikster period they lost me.) I honestly would pay a little more for a model without Netflix.

Edit - On the other hand... If they are done updating the old model and it's aready awesome... that can be a better plans in some ways too.... Hmmmm... Going to keep reading up on it.

It is pretty good and has only minor glitches. I picked up a couple more of the Live-SMP when the WDTV came out because I already had them in play and wanted to keep a consistent interface around the house.

I recently had to return both my Seagate drives for replacement, a 2TB GoFlex with dock, and a 4TB Backup+. The replacements are working for now but I don't trust them the way I used to...

Hi ALL, How are You??

I've read your posts about "WD TV Live Plus HD" related to handle main movie BR rips with seamless branching (.ISO BluRay or BDMV structure)

I don't want to remux the discs...Have you solved it without using tsMuxer or similar?
I mean, according to the new official firmware -year 2013- (1.06.42_B), WD TV Live Plus uses the .MPLS files from the BluRay disc or what?
How WD TV Live works to handle seamless branching issues?

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Netflix worked without a hitch for me after the update. Funny, I hadn't checked for an update for a long time until Saturday and there was none. Now, two days later it comes.

I haven't had time to update my players yet. What is this mention of the "GRID UI interface theme". Is that the UI for the "new" WDTV Media Player?

I have upgraded and taken a quick look at the new firmware.

The grid UI is pretty useless if you need to access files as far as I can tell. All it seems to offer is a new way of dealing with services, which I don't use. I went back to the Mochi theme rather quickly. The grid UI doesn't seem to give any access to local or network storage! Strange thing.

I can't tell if there are new things worth mentioning. I wonder if they have fixed episode ordering without leading 0 when using the media library. (1, 10, 11, 2, 3, 4...)

They have added a few services. Is it just me or they gather old, public domain, movies/cartoons and offer us these? Most of the new movie services offering seem pretty useless to me. Is there any content worth mentioning in these? Have any of you found any gems in there?

Boy, talk about a head scratcher. If the new firmware for the Live-SMP gives it the same UI as the "new" WDTV-MP then the only difference between the two models is the lack of a Netflix client in the WDTV-MP.

Must have been something serious if WD had to go through the process of releasing a new model just to scrub Netflix -- don't you wish you could be a fly on that wall.

You have addressed my concern as to whether or not you get forced to the Grid UI or can remain in the classic UI. My understanding is the Grid UI appeared with the WDTV Play which is primarily an Internet streamer so it stands to reason it would be service centric. Other than a rare use of UTube, I don't use any streaming channels so their presence is irrelevant to me -- I'm strictly a local content streamer. It doesn't look like there is much in the way of useful fixes so I'm going to upgrade just one of my boxes and play with it to make sure the stuff I do use hasn't been broken before I do the rest.

I wonder if the "new" WDTV-MP gives you the option to run the Mochi theme or if it forces you to the Grid UI. That would be taking a page out of MS Win-8 playbook.

I haven't used Services in at least 18 months, so I can't even tell if the look is different.

It says "sevices" at the top right, so it seems there must be a way to change to Files or ML view, but I couldn't figure out how. Home, Options, color keys all seem to be useless. Fortunately the old UI still seems to work OK.

Kinda reminds me of the first time I saw Win Media Center - like they assigned the UI design to some 8-year-old whose only experience was on a 1st-gen Nintendo...

Hopefully someone here will figure it out and clue us in...

Edit> Oh and if this "UI" does turn out to be as worthless as it seems, is there a way to ditch it and recover the space?

You are not forced to the Grid UI. You can easily go back to the classic i.e. Mochi UI.
What I like in this new firmware is support for Miracast. Works nicely with my Nexus 5. I can project my cell display on my TV. Great.

My update kept my theme, whatever it is. It did display some message about trying out Grid though.
