Well, after applying the latest FW update, my SMP was working great...until now when my wife tries to use Pandora, it keeps displaying that it is "a format that WD doesn't support, please see manual for correct file types." After pulling power, resetting, restarting, I could coax it back, until this past Friday.
I just gave up, ordered a refurbed Roku 2 (2014) & moved on.

It's a known bug that has popped up some firmwares ago and simply isn't reproducible. If you disconnect power and let it boot up, you will be able to play the very files that gave you the message.

Up until this past weekend I was able to do that. Just got tired of having to monkey around with the aging device, and having to deal with my wife's frustration at it not just working when you turn it on & it plays what it's supposed to.
As I said, the Roku2 does what we need simply & hassle free.

YMMV. Since it happens so rarely on my end, I'll be able to live with it for a while.

Of course. Since our only usage of it these days is for Pandora for my wife, figured it's just easier moving to a reliable solution. Because ...if Momma ain't happy, then ain't nobody happy.

If my WDTV Live ever craps out...what other device can play my ISO files?

Digital Pass-Through

I currently have my WDTV Live configured for digital pass-through via hdmi and routed to my AVR. I'm adding a DAC/headphone amp (with TOSLINK optical input) and really hoping for a setup like this: use hdmi digital pass-through for video media and use optical digital pass-through for music or alternately send digital pass-through to both hdmi AND optical all the time. Am I correct in assuming the WDTV Live cannot do this and I need to go into settings each time and flip the audio output setting?

If that is true, I suppose I could buy a second WDTV and dedicate one to video and one to audio playback. Or can anybody recommend a similar media player that could accomplish what I want to do?

Thanks for any help.

Doesn't your AVR have a headphone jack?

Yeah, mine's been good too. No freezes. Not that I've been using it a lot in the past month tho.

No problems but no fix for the bugs either. I do rarely see the mention that a certain file is not supported. After a cold reboot the very same file plays just fine. Still not reproducible, though.

Question YouTube error

My brother said he lost YouTube recently. He gets some strange message about YouTube or channel not being available any more.

1. Is this normal since WD is dropping out of the STB game, or should YouTube still be working?

2. If normal (maybe due to latest firmware upgrade) ... any way to get it back? Maybe a manual firmware back-flash ... or did they shut down some required network "middle-man" service?

Sorry for being vague, but I don't have one to look at. I just helped him install his on wired network and setup Windows shares years ago.

I'm specifically interested in mid-movie freezes - any more or less of those?

Is this player able to play bluray folder without we going in to the folders and selecting the m2ts file to play? I tried pressing the play button on the folder name, but it is not picking up the largest file to play. It's says no file to play

No. It is a file oriented player.

I know this player plays iso, my question was if it can play a bluray folder. Looks like it cannot play a BD folder.

It wasn't a "smart" answer -- It was a direct answer to the question you posed.

You asked if it played BD folders, I told you no, it was a file oriented player. You said you thought it once did play folders. My answer is that if the BDMV folders were packaged as an .iso (a single file) then the WD Live would play them.

Sorry you misinterpreted.

IIRC it did play from folders. You had to move down to the stream folder and it would play the largest m2ts?

The latest firmware still does that -- drilling down through the folder structure and pressing play on the Stream folder will play an .m2ts file within. It doesn't work with nested folders, you have to drill down from the top level. It was clear he was after playing the video from the top level folder to avoid the drilling.

Thanks this worked, going into the stream folder and pressing play, played the movie.

so now my wdtv won't play .ts files - no idea why. It used to.

edit : played with this some more

TS won't play
M2TS won't play
can't find a tool to split/cut MKV's reliably back into small MKVs.

I'll back up and explain what I'm trying to do. I have ripped blu-rays in MKV format on my shared network drive. I'm trying to create a demo reel (for example) of all the lightsaber sequences from the Star Wars movies. I put together all the TS files (11 of them from SW Ep 1) and it won't play on my WDTV.

I did this previously with all the space battle sequences from SW 4,5,6 and it worked beautifully but now those won't play either.

I have changed network cables since it worked last and I have updated firmware to the most recent. The network cable is showing the amber light which I think means something isn't quite right. But I ran speedtest from a laptop on that cable and I was still getting 600MB/s (I have gigabit internet service) so I don't think the cable is the real issue.

I have been using tsMuxerGUI to do the splits and cuts (btw this program makes bad cuts - cuts off early on almost every file I make)

the files will not play on my wdtv or through plex on my xbox one. They will play on my PC (diff network cable) but without sound (this has always been the case - I don't think my PC can decode DTS or whatever)

just to make sure I wasn't going crazy I put the wdtv on the same network cable as my PC and still no good.

SOOOO....

Can I either figure out how to make TS files play on my WDTV again ORRR can I figure out how to encode these into another format that will play?

btw normal MKV's will play through the WDTV and through plex on the xbone

I can't seem to find a flash drive to see if local playback will work on the WDTV...

edit again - found flash drive nothing plays mkv or ts rebooting...

device reset fully, locally plays ok, nothing over network despite the appearance of a new WD My Cloud tile on the home screen.

I think this thing might be bricked.

edit youtube works (poorly and v slowly)

Hello Members,
I played a movie/s on Netflix via my WD live tv player connected to receiver denon x6200 (calibrated with audysee) ...the sound on my JBL 530 was less than my phone speakers even at 50db. I checked all possibilities on the media player but no use. The YouTube videos were fine from the player in terms of both audio and video and even when played over bluetooth. But sounds while playing Netflix movie was very feeble. There is no setting I could find inside Netflix. Plz help. Even the sound from movie played from a USB drive is very less. Not sure what setting I need to have in media player. I even tried my laptop and the sound was better not gr8 as expected.
Suspect - settings on media player or HDMI cable or settings on AV receiver ...not sure what to check now.
Any help would be appreciated.
