Updated the firmware via the restore process.

Interestingly I can access the device directly via Windows Explorer but it is named "Venus". I named the device "EP950", so not sure where Venus is coming from but since it's working I can live with it.

BT function is accessible via HTTP://IP-Address/unicgi

However, I have been unable to add a new torrent. No matter what I've tried, I get a "413 - Request Entity Too Large"

Any suggestions?

This is the last piece of functionality not working for me before I can declare this product perfect for my needs..

Has the power-up issue for the EP950 been addressed yet? This issue is holding me back from a purchase. I couldn't cope with a device that doesn't reliably respond to power-up/power-down.

I worry this could be a hardware issue, like an undervalued cap or some such issue. But it also could be a firmware issue where the timing window is not appropriate to deal with detection of the power buttons.

Otherwise, it sounds like all of the 3D issues can be dealt with just by user understanding and perhaps TV selection and settings.

Blimey, the newest firmware has not addressed the power on/off problem. It happens to me constantly and it is very frustrating. If this cannot be resolved, I'm not sure if I can keep this. I'm trying to be patient to see if some of these issues will be fixed, but I have just 3 weeks left to decide if I'm keeping this. I want to like this player, but it definitely needs some firmware fixes fast. There's no way we should be waiting months to get these issues addressed.

As far as 3D issues, I made some suggestions in the previous pages and I hope they will be considered and implemented, as I think they will improve things.

"Also, makeMKV won't do any good for those of us who want to watch 3D ISOs, since you can't make a 1080p frame-packed mkv. If you want full 1080p/24 playback at full Blu-Ray quality, you need to be able to play the ISOs (or BDMV folders). So ISO playback is important for alot of people. It's not just about playing the movie. It's about playing the whole disc"

DVDFab 8 Qt will rip a 3D ISO, but I see your point about menus...
Could be a hundred reasons why streaming might be choppy....have you defragged after ripping an ISO ? 25 gigs or more of fragged files will cause most hard-drives to work triple hard....
Streaming is a hit or miss proposition to start with....if you really want max performance plug some drives straight into the 950....problem solved...
If you run an antivirus program while streaming your system is in a constant state of upheaval....

eagle_2, Have you removed the film off the front of the player? I do not have the power issue you mentioned. If you do still have the film, please remove it to see if this fixes your problem.

Help please.

Dave, I had the same issue as you, and tried different flash drives with the same result. I then tried formatting the flash drives to EXFAT, and had the same disapointing results. As I suspect you know, the manual (ha, ha, ha) provides very little guidance and makes no mention of the USB format requirements.

I have since reformatted my flash drives to NTFS, and now the EP950 can access them just fine. Playback from the USB and file transfer to the HDD works nicely with the EP950 USB 2.0 port, and file transfer of 4.5GB DVD .ISO files from my Corsair USB 3.0 flash drive is really pretty quick.

I would suggest you try formatting your flash drive to NTFS, I think you will be pleased with the reuslts.

I have owned this media player for a little over a week and am trying very hard to like this unit since it has so much potential. I guess I am finding my way through trial and error, and so far I have no major complaints. I guess as long as it does what I expect it should, I can live with it even though the formware seems a little like a beta version that could have used some more refinement prior to launch.

I bought this unit fully intending to stream DVD and BD ISO files. After streaming a fews DVD ISOs and reading the feedback from others, I am wondering if streaming larger BD files might be a little like asking for trouble until the firmware seems a little more stable. While I have a growing library of BD and 3D BD, I have hundreds of DVDs, and have only streamed basic DVD .ISO files so far. Video quality while streaming DVDs seems pretty good on my Samsung PN59D8000, but the EP950 did drop the audio for a second or so a few times for no apparent reason.

I installed a WD 3TB Caviar Green HDD, and so far playback from the HDD has been very good. I do hope in time the EP950 will have the bandwidth to handle streaming 3D BD .ISO files, but I guess as long as as the storage and playback from the HDD is stable, I can live with that for now.

RideSober, thanks for that, I'll give it a try. Still, that won't help with the usb wireless adapter that is supposed to work with the unit. Have you tried a usb adapter in your unit?

Also, it is curious, I received a reply from Micca support advising me to return the unit to Amazon as defective.

Hi Jack,

Here are a few questions.

A few of the issues I've found in the first day of use are 1) it has a problem with UPnP, although it works fine with TVersity it will not work with either ORB or Playon. I get nothing at all with ORB but with Playon I can see all of the menus, all of the folders and all of the video files - it just won't play them 2) I would like to see the time shown on the digital clock but he only time I've seen it was when actually setting the time, it seems to only show the function it's performing or the counter when playing videos 3) Several of the icons in the Android menu do not function.

Also, is it possible to add items to the Premium Apps Menu? I'd really like to get Pandora there.

How do I download and add Android Apps?

Thanks

Michael

I have streamed a few BD iso's (wired) and they played fine, the audio drop problem is new since last firmware update for me. The USB3 file transfer to internal 2tb sata 6gb/s is insanely fast for me and the best way to go imo.

Now that you mention it, I have not yet removed the film since I have been holding off in case I end up having to return it to Amazon. I'll remove it right now and see how it goes, since it won't affect an Amazon return anyhow.

isolar801, to be honest I haven't defragged in quite a while now and I know my main drive is quite defragmented. My antivirus was also running while I was streaming. I'll do a defrag this weekend and see how streaming goes with my anti-virus temporarily disabled.

EDIT:

1) I removed the plastic film over the front of the box, and turned it on with the remote. The first thing it did was instantly power down again, and I had to do the usual try it again and again until it turns on ritual. So the film is not responsible for the power on/off issue.

2) After defragging a 3D ISO, disabling my antivirus, and trying a new CAT5E cable, I tried streaming the ISO again through the file browser. I watched 30 minutes straight, and there were a few stutters along the way, big enough to break the audio for a moment. My drive is a WD 1TB black. There were also constant tiny "hiccups" where it would seem to skip a frame or two regularly. I get the feeling that this is due to a timing/framerate issue, as the HiMedia thread seems to report a lot of timing framerate stutters. The 3D ISO I was streaming is of course 1080p@23.976fps, and is a computer animation demo disc, which makes it very easy to see the slightest hiccup since the camera is in constant motion around 3D animated objects.

So far I've been disappointed with the streaming aspect of this player, and for all I know, maybe streaming in general is nothing but a headache, so maybe Micca/HiMedia can't be faulted for this. I don't know. I do however think that Micca should take a close look at framerate and timing issues to make certain that files of various framerates play perfectly smooth at various resolutions and framerates.

I might be able to install a HD into the Micca this weekend, so I'll see if I get smoother playback once I try that.

According to Amazon, the EP950 has an internal 3.5" drive bay and supports hard drives larger than 2TB.

Has anyone successfully connected a 3TB USB external desk hard drive through USB cable? I bought a Seagate 3TB FreeAgent GoGlex External Desk hard drive (with separate power adapter), but EP950 cannot recognize the drive. I need to decide whether to return that hard drive.

I'm not sure if this is a useful feature - can EP950 open an encrypted folder from attached hard drive which is encrypted by TrueCrypt for (Parent control) - the box is Linux based, right?

In order to connect EP950 to Windows 7 within home network, do I have to enable Windows 7 HomeGroup's network discovery? I already turned on EP950's SAMBA & BT.

From EP950, can I see my shared folder "C:\\Users\\username\\Downloads\\Shared" on Windows 7 if the "C:\\Users" folders sharing has been disabled? If not, it is fine, drap and drop files directly in Windows 7 is more critical to me as I don't want to move the EP950 around to add more photos/music/videos.

UPDATE: I can see VENUS now from Windows 7, but can't see my PC from EP950 - do I have to create work group? Actually I just want to share a folder. Also, I can access BT, but for some torrents, it complains "too big entity" error message.

Got to say, this is a really cool product. My suggestion to add support for TrueCrypt or whatever.

Dave's issue is that the USB drive does not see any USB devices, including the USB WiFi dongle. FAT32 file systems are definitely supported, so the fact that his EP950 is not seeing any of the USB devices indicated that the USB connectors on his player may not be working correctly.

I have confirmed that formatting to NTFS made no difference. I have a replacement in progress.

Thought I'd report these in bullet format to make them easier to read/reply to by Micca:
  1. Spotty connectivity to Windows. After firmware update I could see "Venus" and even map a drive to the EP950 folders. However, once it was powered off once, I can no longer access them. I can see the EP950 but not the shares. I've tried rebooting, turning Samba On/Off, even attaching a different SATA drive. Nothing.

  2. "413 - Request Entity Too Large" for ANY BT I've tried.

  3. WoL (Wake on Lan) - does the EP950 support this?

If MIcca can shake the bugs out of these devices I think they have a real winner on their hands. I am just inches away from becoming a very vocal advocate of their products. I hope they taking note - they have a small window in a crowded space to make a name for themselves before some big shot (like Google) swoops in and dominates the market segment.

Today I noticed my Windows 7 does not see VENUS, and EP950 still cannot see my PC even it can see my workgroup. It is hard to know what triggers the disconnection. But I can streaming videos/music/movies from my Android tablet and phone through SMABA server. It is nice. BT seems stopped working after reboot the device and the BT player web page start/stop button has effect but UI is hard to understand and sometimes it automatically log out, and the Samba server password changed back to the default after reboot EP950.

those having on/off problems see if using the front panel does the same. Problem could be the remote. My 900B does not exhibit this problem.

mkoss, I mentioned in a previous post that the power on/off problem happens when I use the front panel also, not just with the remote.

On another note, I've installed a 500GB HDD in the Micca today, and formatted the drive. At least I think I did - after hitting format, it didn't actually say anything like "formatting" or "format compete", so I'm assuming it did because the HDD shows up now.

But, I cannot see the Micca from the Windows 7 homegroup. What do I have to do to see the Micca HDD so I can copy files from my pc to Micca's HDD? I can use Micca's file browser to enter my "WORKGROUP", and I can browse through my shared files, but when I click my Homegroup shortcut on my pc, it says "There are no other people in the homegroup". Am I doing something wrong here? In case anybody has missed it, I now have my Micca and my pc connected to a gigabit switch and everything seems to be working except my pc won't see the Micca.

If this helps, under Control Panel>Network and Internet>Network Map, it lists my pc name and my tv on the left side, then it shows it connected to my switch, then gateway (router) then Internet.

So: pc/tv>switch>gateway>internet

On the bottom of the page are two more icons - 1 for HD900 and 1 for LOCALHOST. Is the HD900 the Micca? I would imagine so. So what do I do to copy files from my pc to the Micca?

I'm not sure if this is the proper way to do this, but I discovered that under file manager, if I browse to the file I want to copy, I can hit the green button for the option to copy, and then I can select the internal HDD to copy the file to. Is this the way to do it? The Windows 7 resource monitor says the Network activity while copying a 20GB ISO is around "107 Mbps Network I/O". My connection is a gigabit connection. Does this sound right? It says roughly 13,600,000 B/sec. I thought it would copy faster than that through a gigabit connection. Am I doing this right? This seems slow to me but I'm not used to networks so this is new to me. If it's a gigabit wired connection shouldn't it be transferring faster than this?

EDIT: At this point, I'm absolutely frustrated with this unit and I'm not too many steps away from sending this back and giving up. I have been very patient trying to get this thing working but it all seems hopeless. Now it won't even let me use the file browser to connect to my pc. I JUST DID THIS like 20 minutes ago to copy a file through file manager. Now nothing shows up under WORKGROUP except LOCALHOST. A few minutes ago it listed my pc name, now it doesn't. It did the same thing earlier when I was trying to figure all this out. It wouldn't let me browse my pc, then for some reason it did and my pc showed up. This is very frustrating and I have no idea why it's there one minute and gone the next. This unit never should have been released with these issues. It took me 7 attempts to turn the unit on earlier today.

And my firewall is deactivated temporarily so that's not the issue here.

UPDATE: I enabled my firewall and disabled it again and now the Micca sees the pc again. I have no idea why it's acting like this. This is why you should never buy a product like this that comes with no support. I feel totally alone here other than a few other users in here who have the same unit. I really want to give this thing a chance but it's not looking good.

Also, "Are you sure to shut down the system?" is not proper English and looks embarrassing for a unit like this to have bad English in the menus. It should read "Are you sure you want to shut down the system?".

eagle_2 try doing a factory default through the menu and reconnect the micca to your network to see if that fixes it. On another note, the best way to copy files to/from this player is via slave usb located in the back.

You mean connect my pc to the usb 3.0 port on the back of the Micca? My pc doesn't have 3.0, only 2.0, so it would only transfer at 2.0 speed. It would take like 2 hours to copy a single ISO over at that speed. And would my pc see the Micca as just another HDD if I did that?

But then why did I just spend $25 on a new gigabit switch to connect wired LAN thinking I would get fast file copy transfer speeds if I'm just going to use USB 2.0 anyways?

eagle_2, I have a gigabit network too but I have seen the usb transfer faster. A 22Gb ISO takes my about 22-25 min over network and about half of that via usb. Did resetting the micca helped?

I have had the same problem with the himedia being seen by my pc using windows xp using a previous firmware. I need to try again using the latest.
My iconbit looks like an external hd to my pc.

Jack, would you please take a look at a recent post on the HiMedia thread? HokeySmoke has posted some concerning information regarding framerate/stuttering issues. I have been saying all along that there is a regular stutter when playing files. HokeySmoke has actually timed the stutter to exactly every 42 seconds for 3D files, and every 30 seconds for other types of files. Please take a look, because this stuttering has me very concerned.

Casper77, I'll try copying over USB but are you saying that it's faster for you to copy over USB than by wired gigabit LAN through a switch? And what am I doing wrong with copying - am I supposed to see the Micca from within Windows 7 over LAN and be able to drag and drop files like with USB, or is that not how it is supposed to work?

EDIT: after copying a 7GB file through USB 2.0 to the Micca HDD my transfer speed is around 35-50 Mbps, which is much slower than the 107 Mbps I was getting over wired LAN with Micaa's file browser. So transferring files over USB 2.0 is not a very good option in terms of speed, though it is most certainly easier and more convenient. I wish I could figure out how to drag and drop files over LAN like with USB. Then again, it seems they both take about the same amount of time to copy the same file, so I don't know what to make of the whole thing.

Another problem to report here now - I just connected my Micca to my pc via USB 2.0 (no 3.0 on my pc) and my computer installed a driver, then it shows the Micca HDD. I can then copy files to the Micca HDD.

However, the Micca will not boot if the USB cable is connected. It gets stuck on the Micca boot screen. If I turn it off and unplug the USB from the pc then reboot the Micca it boots normally, but it won't boot when connected to the pc. Can anybody tell me why?

Is because of the USB slave function. When connceted to the PC the micca will only work as a USB attached storage. Once you are done transfering the files and unplugged the cable, the micca will then work as a media player. This is normal.

Casper77, thanks for that information. Glad to know at least something is working correctly then. As usual, this was not mentioned in the useless manual.

I just had the opportunity to finally sit down and actually watch something straight through. I watched a 2D 720p blu-ray rip encoded @ 23.976fps. My video output was set to 1080p@60, with 24fps enabled, so the rip played at 1080p@24fps. I played the file from the internal HDD I installed yesterday.

There was constant stuttering throughout the movie. It was a very busy film so it was difficult to tell how many seconds passed between stutters, but it was happening constantly throughout the film - just a quick skip like a few frames were skipped, or maybe a slight pause, it's hard to tell - it's basically just a quick "stutter".

On another note, I copied a video file through the file manager, from my pc to the internal HDD, and after I turned off the Micca, the file was gone. Unbelievable! I copied another video file from my pc to the Micca using USB 2.0 and that file remained after turning off the Micca. So the one I copied using the file manager vanished after a restart. I tested this a second time by copying a second file over through the file manager, and turned off the Micca again. Upon restart, the file was gone again. The only file that remained was the one I copied through USB.

I am very close to giving up on this player. I am really, really trying to like this player, but this thing just has too many problems. It has great potential, but there are way too many issues for this to be worth the money.

If Micca can't guarantee that these bugs will absolutely be ironed out, soon, then I have no choice but to return this for a refund while I still can.
