So last year I gave myself a nice X-mas present in the form of a DROBO-FS. Now I'm eyeballing the Synology unit. However, is it my imagination that I am thinking that 2TB disks around this time of the year were around $100 where they seem much more $ this time around??

Not your imagination, flooding in Thailand where all the drive manufacturers plants are have drove up prices. It will be awhile before they come back down.

and for quite a while there were 2tb drives for $60! I remember continually jumping on the Hitachi newegg deals wondering why I was bothering as the price just kept dropping. Now I know why my dad said it is better to be lucky than smart...

I second that sentiment.

Unfortunately the price of HDD's has gone up dramatically but i dont think that will be long lived and in fact the prices have flattened out recently. In the meantime use this as an opportunity to offload used drives on Ebay. I just sold five 1TB drives that were almost three years old for slightly more than i originally paid for them.

Prices will fluctuate an will be higher probably through most of 2012. I sell a lot of high end storage (EMC, HP and IBM) and we've received notification that this will be an issue for a while with increases from 5%-15%. I also have a DS1511+ and love it. It has a lot of features built in and there are several iOS and Android apps that let you access remotely. I use it to store spec sheets for the hardware I sell and access it when I'm out of town, in addition to a large photo, video and music library. You can't go wrong with Synology.

I couldn't resist and ordered it indeed. What are your favorite iOS apps for remote access?
