Opera? The web browser? Or is that the name of a new dune juke box system?

Either way thats disappointing, dune sorely needs help in the gui department.

Curious what will run xbmc then since sigma is demoing its chip with xbmc running. And would that stop users from loading xbmc onto sigma devices such as a dune if those two (sigma and xbmc) are now apparently working together? This is over my head as to if it can be done.

By the way do you have a quote for that, not really for me, but someone reported elsewhere the new dunes would run xbmc based on a press release. Would like to simply clarify their report for them if its not happening.

from what I understood they want to use opera to create some "skins" or applications (distributed through their future Dune HD Portal). those applications could be new jukeboxes using the new 867x chipset abilities and would have a better look and feel than the current dune_folder.txt system they use. they could do whatever they want with it, like the flash apps they already added, but with a deeper integration in the GUI. Some kind of nmj based on opera I guess...But this is very unclear and they didn't show anything at IFA except behind closed doors (+ the fact that they're completely paranoid and don't want anything to go out before any "official" announcement)

regarding xbmc on sigma's chipset, it's currently only running on the 8656 (lowest end chipset with openGL). Checking the official topic on xbmc.org seems to point to the fact that each chipset might need its own xbmc version, and that the partnership between sigma/xbmc devs is really in an early stage. http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=112159&highlight=sigma+designs

Yes, but assuming it supports HTML 5 (or advanced DHTML) very rich UIs will be possible.

Makes sense. I have actually been playing with DFI (Dune Flash Interface) some guy has made. Its rather amazing what he has done with Flash Lite. I just moved into a new house and haven't had extensive ability to play with it but I had set it up at work on my Base 3.0 and its very cool. I would recommend everyone check it out if you haven't so far, It has a way to go but its very usable IMO I think Flash or HTML5 is the future of Jukeboxes.

I just hope Opera works well for Jukeboxes. I am not really interested in browsing the internet from my Dune at all.

DFI is indeed a very good and nice looking jukebox. But the fact that Adobe just killed Flash lite will certainly make it a dead end (I guess that's why there's still no DFI 2.0...).

Opera + HTML5 + new 867x chipsets will able 2D/3D jukebox with many "moving" objects as well as possible feedback from the dune to the apps (seen/not seen management anyone ?). Question is : will it be possible to run it on previous models ?

Does anyone know if there will be a Duo in the new product line, the Base model looks like it could fit 2 drives with one being hot swappable.

I emailed a dune retailer yesterday and they said they doubt we will see new players before xmas.
Did hear the new Popcorn hour has sole rights to the new chips till xmas
So makes sense
hope it give dune plenty of time to get their machines without much in the way of bugs
I am looking for a BASE 3D

I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken

My understanding is that it's only the dune hd max 3d that is using the same chipset that popcorn hour have exclusive rights to. That unit won't appear until next year. The other players use another chip that doesn't have this exclusivity issue so they should be out in the next month or so.

I've been very happy with my Base 3.0 as well but would buy again for DSF/DSD support and a nicer interface. I suppose 4K might be relevant as displays are around and since cinemas are given 4K digital sources they will likely leak eventually.

DSD support would be great, but it is of limited appeal.

1. So few people have DSD source material ripped and/or downloaded
2. DSD is converted into PCM anyway as soon as any room correction is applied

You can easily build a HTPC to play DSD/DSF/DFF files, pass 4k, etc and the price difference is not that much.

By the way... I own 2 Dune 3 Base and 1 Dune 3 Prime. It will be 4 years running in November

This may have already been answered but was there any indication that the HD-TV103D would support 3D BD iso playback or will that be reserved for the HD Base 4.0 3D and Max 2.0 3D?

None of the new Dune media player will support ISO due to Cinavia.

Why not? I don't see the connection.

ISO support is in no way tied to a BDA license. I would agree that Cinavia make it more difficult for the Dune to support Blu-Ray menus and the HD audio formats that are tied to a BDA license, but the ISO file-format is an open international standard.

Its a good point Mark ;the new oppo 103 [with a cinavia bda license naturally] has a bd iso workaround using smb wink.gif From Bill Mclains faq ;
Quote:
No support for ISO files, but [ needs research and verification ] for Blu-ray ISO files you can mount them on your PC using Daemon Tools, Virtual Clone Drive, or any other virtual disc software. You can then use SMB to browse for this drive and playback the BDMV. It will launch as if it were a physical disc. [ Update: so far this works with Samba server on Linux, but we have not seen it working properly on Windows with the tools mentioned. The Dune player shows the same thing when accessing Windows servers, so it seems to be a MS system issue. ]

well...the old oppo were'nt able to read ISO without Cinavia, so i guess this is not related wink.gif

Dune always have been able to read ISO (with or without menu), and cinavia shouldn't impact this. I guess that Bill's post is about the problem of virtually mounting an iso an read it as a folder structure over the network. They tried this turnaround with a dune while a dune don't need it...

Don't forget Gus, ISO is just a container, it does not imply that an ISO is a full disc rip
