Yeah, I'll check my my brother first, I think he may have a 750GB laying around he isn't using to get it started.

Can you hook an external HDD up to an UNRAID server?

Thanks Sean, always helpful. I can look into starting my server with just my 1TB external and a smaller internal, and then build it out as I can.

yes thats one of the advantages of unraid is its ability to handle hetergenous hard drives. you are limited to 3 drives until you buy a key.

My last 2 drives I bought for my UnRaid were 2tb Samsung drives at $65 each at Newegg before the flooding and price jump.

Glad I havent needed any since then!

Tell me about it. I need a couple more HDDs, but with these prices, I am willing to wait. I only had two 2tb hdd available for my unRaid server, but I've got an external 2tb HDD that I also use for my media. So, I've decided to take the HDD out of it and put it in my unRaid server to have at least 4tb storage and 1 2t parity drive.

I might not even do a parity drive, and just have all 3 2tb hdd as storage only until I can get a couple more HDD and then do a parity drive....but I don't know if that is possible? Anyone?

Finished putting the server together today. Firs time building a Server/PC or any sort. Fun experience! Next project will be a rack mount server. Don't plan on that for a while though.

Just got to run the Bios tomorrow morning and boot it up. Hope everything goes smooth.

Looks good. I still have to check the BIOS to make sure it boots with USB, and then run the OS, but it is on hold until I can get either a DVI or older style cable to hook it up to my monito...or my mother-in-law finally decides to bring me her old lcd monitor to use it

I just got home from work, I was going to take some pics today, but I've got to back to work in like 10 hours. So, I'm going to bed. I'm going in a 8 pm, and getting off at 8 am, and then returning to work at 2 pm to 11 pm.

I'll be off Wed. and Thursday. I will take some pics then, and I should have it up and running by that time as well. The other good news, I've found someone next were I live who is willing to sell me a 2tb hdd for $80 bucks.

I got my unRAID up and running pretty easily yesterday. Just had to alter the BIOS to first boot from the USB. It seemed fine while I was going through the setup recommendations, including installing unMenu and some of the other stuff BUT...

Then I couldn't access it from another PC anymore. It keeps giving me a prompt for username/password. I tried both the default "root" username with no password, and also tried the second username and password I put in. Just not accepting it. I'll have to see about hooking it back up to a monitor to try to see what the issue is. Any ideas from here what it could be? Maybe something to do with adding that other login? I just can't get to the server management screen anymore, using //tower or the IP address.

Did you reboot your router? Try that first,
then if necessary move the flash drive to a windows PC, remove the config/passwd file;move it back to the unRAID server, reboot.

That was a weird sticking point on my friend's setup as well. I don't know what he did before it started, but it didn't make sense. I finally got it to work by removing some accounts & re-adding them. I still don't know why it failed or what fixed it, but it's been up and running for 6 months without a glitch.

I'm going to remember the router reset & the password file removal to see if I get an issue when (if, the way things are going lately) I build.

I am still contemplating taking the 2tb hdd out from my external hard drive enclosure....but for not 3 hdd will do.

I'll try to post some pics later. Before and after zip ties

Chris,

Are you using the free unRaid OS or did you pay for the Plus / Pro? I've got 3 drives right now, but if I ended up taking the one from my external hard drive I'll have 4, and I'll have to buy the license...what to do!

How much faster will it be to transfer file if I use a cache drive? Well, If I end up using a parity drive and a catch drive, I'll end up with 4 tb of storage only, which should be enough for now I suppose.

From what I've been told a cache drive makes transfers much faster. There are also benefits for using the same size cache drive as your parity drive. If your parity drive dies the cache can work as a spare.
