There is also a 1512 coming out. But I'll probably go for broke with the 8 bay unit. I contemplated setting up an unRaid server, but after reading about different issues on the limetech forums I think I favor the robustness and stability of the Synology. I certainly don't lack the skills to install and maintain a homebrew server such as unRaid, it's just I don't want to expend the time and energy on such a seemingly finicky endeavor. My 2 bay Synology has exceeded my expectations.

I just finished building one. Actually this is my first unRaid server build, and I am glad I built it. It works awesome, it is simple to set up, and cost me less than Synology...until I start buying more drive You just have to make sure that your set up will work with unRaid, and they've got a long list of parts to use.

Media Server: UnRaid Server: 15TB of storage and growing :).

It's a new product so pricing is, I suppose, fluctuating at this time. But a quick search shows that, per bay, the eight-bay DS1812+ is more affordable than the five-bay DS1511+.

That's useful only if you need (or think you need) six or more bays.

Mine will be here tomorrow but I didn't even realize that I can't use the beta for DSM 4.0 with it.... Hopefully it will be available shortly. Time to migrate over from WHS1.

Got my 1812 installed. All 8 bays have 3tb drives. Copying movies over now. Its adding the 8th drive in the background but right now im only getting about 55MB/s. The 1511 averaged about 80 to 90 ish. Started to keep the 1511 as a back up but just decided to put it on ebay.
Dean M have you installed yours yet? What are your average transfer speeds?

How much power does it consume with 8 drives? Noisy?

What drives are you using? What is your total usable disk space?

Its still adding the final hard drive but without the 8th drive it says 13.4tb. I am using the Synology hybrid raid and have it set for 2 disk fault tolerance. im using all western digital 3 tb drives

I would think transferring files AND integrating a drive into the raid at the same time would slow down your throughput. It doesn't even sound like something I'd want to do simultaneously!

I haven't jumped yet on the 1812. Waiting for Newegg to stock it.

I'm still having fun though, as DSM 4.0 came out of beta today, currently installing on my 211.

are your transfer speeds over LAN or eSATA? I just downloaded DSM 4.0, I have three 3 TB drives installed and a single 2 TB drive at the moment and I am deciding whether to get more 3 TB drives or just take some 2 TB drives off of the Windows home server. Over LAN I am getting only 10 or 11 MB/s which is frustrating to say the least. More experimenting is necessary obviously.

The expanding the volume is done finally. With 8 3tb hard drives installed with a 2 disk fault tolerance i get 16.09tb worth of storage. Also Since the expand volume is done im back up in the 90 to 100 MB/s. So the parity check and any volume expansion did slow it down but that was before i installed Dsm 4.0.
Dean M that copying over Lan. I did go into the control panel/Network/Network interface and enable jumbo frames
