Hey all. Recently been batch encoding my DVD library to H.264 for streaming to the PS3 (process on the PC, of course, then send over to the ReadyNAS for serving).

The grind, currently, is that I'm flagging all anamorphic content as such and I can see in the Handbrake setting that the display size should be ~954x480. Once the files are viewable by the PS3's browser, I can hit 'more info' and see the display size as something like 720x240.

Which is telling me the truth? Same aspect ratios. But they both look like crap, tbh. And I'm certainly throwing enough bits at them. I feel like looking at the files, in VLC, on the computer display is a little nicer than on the RS-25. But that just may be a screen size thing.

Next step is to play the file and compare to the dvd playing straight out of the playstation. If anyone knows for sure though, that'd be awesome.

Max resolution on DVD is 720x480, so the one showing you 954 is probably wrong. Are you sure you have the correct settings in Handbrake though? I use it all the time and files are consistently good looking (source material willing) so I think your settings may be off. What are you entering for anamorphic and aspect ratio (strict, loose, etc)?

There are 720 x 480 pixels on an NTSC DVD but anamorphic means that the pixels are meant to be displayed as rectangles rather than squares, so for a widescreen film the 720 pixels on the disc will take up 954 pixels on the screen. So they're both right.

Should be 853 not 954. 720x480 pixels anamorphic with a 16:9 aspect ratio is 853x480. If you're getting 954 then your settings are wrong
