So I purchased the newest Apple TV a while ago, and while it's cool... I just never really use it. Why? It doesn't support any of the formats I constantly download (.mkv 1080p files).

I bought it with the intendsion of streaming media to it, and the occasional Netflix. It's neat to control it with my iPad, but about all it's good for is streaming Netflix (unless you want to spend tons of money on iTunes). I also thought I was going to jailbreak it and install xbmc but it turns out the latest Apple TV has still not been hacked... and it doesn't appear it's going to happen any time soon.

So, my question to you guys is this:
Is there a low price (<$150) device I can purchase that will allow me to stream a mixture of content formats to it, as well as allow me to control it with my phone, computer and such.

Basically I download .mkv files all the time, and hook up my projector to my computer and play it that way. It works, but it's annoying that I have to hook up my expensive power hungry computer everytime I want to watch a movie that's on my server. The Nexus Q looked promising, but then that $300 price tag made me not care.

I'm thinking perhaps a PS3 might work, I had an xbox but it was very limited as to what it could actually play. I just wish I had something like my Apple TV but without the media types restriction. I suppose I could convert everything I download but that's awful tedious.

Thanks guys, I hope you're more informed about these things than I am lately.

How about the western digital live player? Looks like it supports 1080p and has a iPhone app.

This looks pretty promising, however I'm concerned that the Apple TV interface may have spoiled me. The reviews I'm watching so a rather clunky interface that seems to load sort of slow. Do you know if i can stream the audio of other devices to it? For instance, I often listen to spotify on my iPad and stream the sound to my Apple TV- can this be done?

Welcome to the great GUI vs Fomat debate. The ATV clearly is more user friendly and reliable and now with 1080p capability, the only drawback is limited local playback capabilities....Apple obviously didn't want to support the file sharing/.mkv crowd as they're into making money on their content. Oh well.

If HD audio isn't important to you (currently HD audio skips) then check out the Boxee Box. It has a great UI and I think it will meet your needs.

I agree.. Boxee Box plays almost everything you throw at it. Also Google TV with a Plex Server + App might be worth looking into.

Well there is also the issue of not offending the content providers. They do support local playback of mp4 stuff. It's not meant to be a all purpose general codec/container player.

With an iPod Touch+ and a newer Mac it also plays XBMC, VLC, etc ...via Mountain Lion's AirPlay... What more do you need? Plex doesn't seem to work properly yet though.

I have a WDTV Live and I've had no problem streaming mkv files, TS files, or blu ray rips. It plays my FLAC music files too. I have not tried to stream spotify on it so I can't help you there, but I have not found the interface to be clunky at all.

Go with a Plex server and client. Either back your ATV or buy a roku which has a plex client. Its all I use now.

Unless you have an ATV 3, then at this time firecore does nothing for you.

Another vote fore Apple TV + Firecore. Works well for streaming stuff off of a NAS (most of what I do) and if you have a iPhone/OS X home than the integration is super smooth.
