Just read the new Dune and PCH threads. There is no "thee best network media streamer." It will depend on your set up and what you want from it.

Media Server: UnRaid Server: 15TB of storage and growing :).

If money is no object, then you should go with a Kaleidescape system. I suspect it does qualify as "thee best".

He said media streamer... the K boxes are video only... not meant for photo, audio, etc.

I should think if one would want something that will play everything now and in the future, you would want something that could be updated "forever", software as well as hardware. The only thing that would fit that bill would be a dedicated HTPC.

+1

build a very nice HTPC (there are beautiful HTPC cases out there) and run it with MyMovies or xbmc (if you are not scared to spend some time to set it up).

Good deal of time I'd have to warn. HTPC has its plusses, but set-top media streamers are (relatively) easier to maintain and use. I've gone XBMC twice, and both times, I came back to media streamers. If latter, the "best" would be the usual recommendations: Dune, PCH, and Mede8er X2 series. If full 3D is needed, then that's an easy one: Mede8er 1000X3D. For now, it's the one to beat.

Oh, I did not realize that the K was video only.

Then again, he mentioned "Dune HD Max? PCH-C300? Mede8er MED1000x3D?", none of which I consider adequate for music or photos. They are close to "video only".

I would then say that there is nothing that does it all. An HTPC does everything except making it easy.

EDIT:
I had to look to be sure. Kaleidescape does have good support for music (but CD quality only, it seems), but I see no mention of photos.

I've got both a Dune D1, and a PCH A-210. Both of the work excellent for what I use them for, which is only streaming video from my server. Lately, I've been using my Dune D1, which is hooked up to my 7.1 surround sound, for listening music. Dune + Zappiti is pretty much solid for me. PCH-A210 with YAMJ / Eversion is solid as well, but it needs a little bit more work for editing the wrong information. I use YAYMAN, and it fixes everything quickly.

I'm buying a new home so, I want to have a media player in my kids rooms. I was going to try to buy a couple more PCH-A210, but with the new Dunes and PCH's coming out, I think I am going to wait it out.

Dune works excellent for music! It can bitstream up to 192khz/24bit/8 channel audio without adding jitter or decimation. Now if you want a pretty music user interface, THAT is a different story.

That is the word but take it with a grain of salt. They announced new players but again at IFA They had empty boxes with no demos running on the new machines, And again no launch dates. So it might be a repeat of last year of announce everything and bring nothing.

Well I took the plunge and bought a Mede8er MED1000x3D figured if i'm going to update again in the next 2-3 then i was going with the lower priced one and it seems like a solid player... Hope I didn't chose wrong...

Mede8er is probably the best Realtek 1186 chip media player out at the moment. It has a few bugs, but Mede8er has been working hard trying to fix them.

I noticed nobody mentioned the Micca EP600/EP950 and I'm curious if there was a good reason considering they both use the 1186 Realtech chip. I personally just bought an EP600 to replace my WDTV and so far it has played everything I've thrown out it and DTS-MA works like a charm to my Denon 2112ci. I still haven't tried streaming 3D content but I plan to try shortly.

If I was to recommend a capable 3D media player, it would be Mede8er. They have better support and quality is much better as well. I used to have high hopes for Micca, but recently quality and support is suffering. What can you expect for $150 media player though.

A lot of people also say them because they have been around the longest. Countless companies have popped up put out a player and vanished in year. There is no one player will work for everyone so if you find something cheap that works for you stick with it,.

To keep themselves in business announcing products so early they never get made and everyone forgets since its been so long. Then raising prices on old technology into the hundreds of dollars pretty much tells me they have no real passion for the guy who wants a great movie experience at home. Keep a look out for maybe the Popcorn A-400. That is most likely my next upgrade for a player.
