I'm looking for a second streamer for upstairs. I use the Boxee Box on the main TV, but also have the PS3 right there to handle Amazon and Hulu Plus. Is there currently a single box that will do all of these functions fairly well? I don't care about HD sound, as the TV upstairs is strictly using the built-in speakers. It looks like maybe the Sony streamers can do all of these, but how good are they? What are some other options?

A Roku with Plex sounds like it should fit what you are looking for smile.gif

Does that require any kind of hack, or is it just an app? Will it work with any of the new Rokus, or do I need a specific model?

It does not require any type of hack to install it, it's an app that is available in the Roku Channel Store. I'm pretty sure it works with pretty much any version of the Roku. You can go here for more info: http://plexapp.com/roku/

I've used the Sony 100 streamer for about a year w/o any problems using a wired connection. However I've only live streamed Netflix and Amazon. I've also streamed stuff from my computer and from a thumb drive and portable hard drive. The Sony 200 is available for around $50 from Amazon and others. I don't think you'll find a more cost efficient solution for your needs.

You need to install 'plex server' on the pc or server that houses your movies...to stream/ transcode 720p or higher you need at least a Windows XP SP3 PC with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor 2.4 GHz or better At least 2GB RAM

Thanks for the info. If any transcoding needs to be done, I'm not interested. smile.gif What's the point of having a dedicated media streamer if you need a separate program to decode the files on the fly? I left that behind with my days of streaming to the PS3! smile.gif

Plex will only transcode if the client doesn't support the file type you are trying to play. If the client does support it, it will simply stream it (I think they call it "Direct Play").

What file format will you be streaming? If MP3 you could get a blu-ray player that is DLNA compatible (most new ones are) and most also have a lot of streaming services apps. My Sony BDP-S570 streams Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, etc. plus connects to the built-in DLNA server on my Buffalo NAS. From it I stream 320 kbps MP3 to the Sony to my stereo and it sounds pretty darn good. If you are going to do FLAC then Plex may be the way to go.

I have Blu Rays ripped to MKV, some to M2TS, and most of my DVDs are ISO files. So no, DLNA will not cut it. smile.gif I need a REAL streamer.

You will not be able to stream ISO to a different devices like roku. Some people have claimed that they have done this successfully but most have not. It will play ISO on the computer that the plex server is installed on. I used plex to stream mkv to my roku boxes and I love it. Hope this helps.
