I just added a Roku XD box to my system, but can't get surround sound to work. The Roku has HDMI output, but my A/V receiver doesn't split out the audio, it only passes it through. So I have the HDMI from the Roku going straight to my TV, and then I am using the optical audio out from the TV to feed the audio to my A/V receiver. I am able to get stereo sound with this setup, but not surround. When I enable surround sound on the Roku (in Audio Settings) and then enable surround within the Netflix app on the Roku, I get no sound.

My best explanation is that the surround sound that is coming out the Roku somehow isn't compatible with my devises. My system is a bit old and on the cheap side. The TV is an LG 32H30, and the A/V receiver is a Sony STR-K990.

Any ideas of how to get this to work?

Thanks,
Kevin

As I continue to search, I see that the Sony A/V (STR-K990) supports DTS, Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic, and Dolby Pro Logic II, but it does not list Dolby Digital Plus, which is what Roku says is required. So, I guess I am out of luck.

In your setup you will only get surround through the TV optical output if you use the TV or Antenna Video nput with a external indoor or outdoor antenna for broadcast TV.. Everything else just sends regular stereo to the receiver through this optical output on the TV.
