Hello all.

First post and I come in need of help.
I am looking for a good recommendation for my home media needs.

I am looking for a solution for the following.

  1. View pictures and videos from a NAS. I will not be storing entire movies or TV shows on the NAS. Just family videos, etc. Some are HD.
  2. Play mp3's and mp3 playlists (.pls or .m3u) from the NAS. This is big for me. The solution has to be able to do this.
  3. Use online services like Netflix, Amazon Instant video, Pandora, Youtube, etc
  4. Play bluray discs.

Current equipment:
An HDTV and a receiver with a free HDMI port for said solution.

Does anyone have a good recommendation that can accomplish these tasks?

Thanks for your time.

Media players come in 2 different forms.

1. Local media players - play home videos, photos, music, ripped video, etc. (Dune, Popcorn Hour)
2. Remote content streamers - play Netflix, hulu, amazon (Roku)

The only way to get both working well in a single box solution is to put together a home theater computer.

Hi,
Do you use an HTPC for your solution?
If so, what type? xbmc? or some other solution?

I have built a HTPC but am not happy with the interface, management and administration. No media player on a computer is integrated enough and full-featured enough to really appeal to me.

I use a Dune player and a Roku box for a 2 box solution right now in one room, a dune player in another and a HTPC in a third.

XBMC, J River and Windows Media Center are the 3 most popular media player applications on PCs and all have limitations.
