Hey Everyone,

One of my favorite pieces of software is Kaleidescape, so I decided to try and clone it for my HTPC. I have posted a video of what I have so far right here . Please let me know what you guys think. Remember though, I've only been working on it for a couple days so it's still in the very, very early stages.

It looks good, nice graphics, nice way to bring in movie summary, nice box around selection. Avoid hassles from Kaleid.... and the studios...... does your software require the physical disc to be present someplace?

South Florida is my Theater
Listen to live music and recreate it at home.

It will not. I have built a software that will automatically detect when you put a disc in the system and rip it to a .mkv file for HD. It then grabs all the metadata for the video. The video does not show any of my dvd's as I haven't implemented playback into this software yet. So far I have only implemented some of the UI design. I have finished a lot more today and am planning on posting a new video very soon so be sure to check back at let me know what you think. Thanks for your comment.

In a way yes, the metadata is a lot like what MyMovies does. But the system as you can see is clearly not MyMovies.

Not trying to knock your efforts but instead of re-inventing the wheel why not just skin XBMC, a few skins like Rapier even do that kind of movie wall already.

XBMC already does all the important stuff for media playback far better than most other HTPC software so you will be much further along with XBMC as the underlying system to your own UI.

I'm also wondering why you wouldn't go the XBMC route. This looks like quite an undertaking! Or were you thinking about using external players?

I'm probably more interested in the automatic ripping function with metadata. The only programs I know that do this are My Movies and Auto Rip n Compress. Will that part be made from scratch as well, or are you going to use makemkv or some other ripping program?

I am going to use VLC as an external player for my UI. This is more of a fun personal project and I don't want to start with XBMC and find out they have limitations that won't allow me to do exactly what I want to do. The automatic ripping function is already done for the most part but needs to be made better. As of now, it is a program on it's own and soon it will be inserted into my HTPC to recognize the DVD server and do everything for you. It uses a combination of DVDFab and Handbrake for compressing. The nice thing is it runs everything with the push of a button instead of having to set up everything and get files. It also finds you the metadata which is a nice addition.

I'm not sure I understand the question. I embedded VLC into my program for playback of the movie.

That was the question and your answer is correct wink.gif

Why vlc and not mpc hc ? Mpc hc is much better when you tweak it...

I've never used Mpc hc. I'll have to look into it now and see the difference in performance. Thanks for the good tip!

Check the Internet and you will find many tutorials to tweak it with reclock, ffdshow, auto frequency and many other addons that make a big difference vs vlc. wink.gif

I'm pretty sure you will find everything you need in the avs htpc section (BTW why didn't you post there ?)

I finally had some time to sit down and code on my application. I have finished TV shows with 3 ways to watch them, Play All Episodes, Resume Current Episode or selecting an individual episode. Let me know what you think. Thanks Everyone.

Can this properly scrape a TV show ISO file that contains multiple episodes?

The complete automation of TV shows is not working quite yet. I am working on it now though. I think I may have found a way to get it to work.

It looks awesome. Probably one of the best I've seen. Would you please consider adding the file name for ISO such as:

TV Show name S01E01 S01E02 S01 E03 S01E04.ISO

TV Show name S01E01E02E03E04.ISO

For MKV

TV Show name S01E01.mkv

If it can understand those 3, it will be golden. Awesome work though.

Thanks for the reply. I am planning on having a format very similar to that.

Would it be a standalone program, or launchable through MC?

Very nice work.

@Mntneer: Right now it is a standalone application.
@vikgrao: I'm not sure what the long term plan is going to be yet. I started the project as a fun side project for myself and find myself coding more and more on it. There have been quite a few people reaching out to me about it though. I want to get the bugs hashed out and then I will decide where to take the project. What would you guys like to see? I love hearing your feedback

I want something that can recognize different naming of files such as the ones I mentioned before.

Another issue I have seen with other jukeboxes is that editing is a PIA.

Also changing the background and the way the skin looks. It would be nice to have an option do this on the fly.

May be an iPad / Android app 😆
