Currently have a HP EX495 (full) and a Media ProBox hooked by way of eSATA to it (almost full)
The pain is, every time I start up the server, I have to manually start the MediaBox. And if the server
ever reboots, then I loose the MediaBox and have to manually reboot again. Like to get away form this setup.

Been looking at doing a fresh build based around the Win8 Pro and use the storage spaces feature to pool
drives and use it as a new server. The biggest question here is will the Dune player be able to play the movies,
music of the server? I know the Dune uses smb and uPnP, but I think the Win8 uses the DLNA.

So before I jump into it, will Win8 and Dune work together, or should I just use WHS 2011?

So basically I am asking:

1. Will the Dune play from a Win8 server like it does a WHS one
2. Which is better in the long run....Win8 server or WHS 2011

WHS would be a better option. Win8 (and even 7) sharing abilities are far from being easy to set up with a media player, while WHS can handle it very easily. You could even run MyMovies for WHS which will be able to build the dune jukebox automatically and can be also used as a ripping station.

other possibilities : unraid server or transform your PC in a NAS freenas or NAS4free

I can understand that WHS would be easier to work with on my DUNE player, but also understand that WHS is a dead product and will
no longer be supported by MS. But on the other hand, Win8 will be around and supported for a good amount of time.
I have an PS3 and Xbox, so could possibly run the Win8 media server thru them to my receiver/TV ( I am guessing).
I wish I could stomach the high price of the Server 2012 Essentials, but don't see that happening. Could go with a
TechNet subscription and get anything thru that route also.

I have till the end of this month to get Win8 pro before price jumps again, just trying to weight the pros and cons and pick
out the hardware now.
