As long as it is h264 in an .mp4 or .mkv container with DD, DTS, AAC or MP3 audio, it will play just fine. I have hundreds of movies and TV episodes ripped from DVD and Blu-Ray that I stream to multiple Roku 3s via Plex Media Server without issue. Plex can also transcode other formats such as .avi on the fly.

I am asking if the Roku can play back forced subs on streamed MKV files that were created with Makemkv. I do not wish to use handbrake. I do not wish to create separate subtitle files.

^^Can it stream w/o using Plex? Not looking forward to tinker with all these third-party apps. I couldn't get Plex to work at all, except they are asking for payment to continue the service. My Oppo handled it fine.

There's a kind of bare-bones first party app which can play files from DLNA servers, the Roku Media Player channel. There's a support article on what media types are supported here.

I don't think that I've used it for anything other than playing files from USB drives. I don't know about forced subtitles in MKVs.

Which is what I am going to do. My Homerun arrives tomorrow. I will record to WMC then use the ROKU 3 to stream it. This way I can watch my shows at which ever TV is free (that's the tough one with teenagers).

Maybe not the right thread, but I came across this listing while looking up films with forced subs, I was going to see if I had any of them and give the Roku a try to see how well it did.

It's a Google Doc spreadsheet listing about 200+ films and their subtitle formats, those that do a lot of ripping/converter might find it useful.

How do you plan to use the Roku to stream off of WMC? WMC stores everything in MPEG-2, which the Roku does not directly support. You can do a minor hack on Plex Media Server to get it to pick up the files from the WMC DVR, but you will need a machine with enough horsepower to transcode them on the fly. The other option would be to install an app on WMC that transcodes the recorded shows to MP4 and puts the transcoded copy into another directly, sans ads. I used to do that and it worked reasonably well.

What's the app you're referring to? Thanks.

Heads up if you haven't seen it yet. Plex has a new UI coming for Roku and it is a HUGE step forward. It's available as a preview for Plex Pass members. It's not fully functional yet but, even in it's current state it is miles better. I was going to replace my Roku's as soon as the FireTV got multichannel capability but, this stopped me in my tracks on that thinking.

Hey guys

I just purchased a Roku 2 on CL sale for $20 bucks, so far I'm quite impress by it, love the fact it's wireless makes things so much easier to connect etc.

I was wondering if I would benefit from getting a Roku 3, or not worth it? I do have a HTPC with MKv files, which I just noticed it being mentioned on here! Not sure how would implement that into the Roku/2 or 3.

Thanks

Djoel

Anyone heard any rumors about the next Roku? Seems like it's been awhile since the 3 arrived, technology-wise anyway.

I installed it last night and think it is a fantastic improvement. This resolved one of my big gripes with the Roku experience and the upcoming Tablo channel redesign will resolve the other one.

It also features the new common Netflix UI instead of the Roku native Netflix UI, which some don't care for. After the first time you start Netflix after boot it starts up in 2 seconds flat, taking you back to precisely where you were when you left.

Suggestions on the following - first setup with roku 3 and media browser server.

Roku 3 is pausing while playback saying loading - sometimes it will kick out for a second and continue other times it will buffer than playback.

Setup:

Wired Roku 3 ---- switch ----- VM server with mb3 server ------ server with movies
The vm is Windows 7 with 4 cores and 4 gigs of ram

The below is settings on Roku 3 and CPU usage on the Windows 7 VM when playing back video.

Mbps HD - CPU Usage
3.2 - 90%
2.5 - 70%
2 - 70%

Smile Is additional memory needed?

I just received my Roku 3 and noticed a memory slot.

I checked with Roku Support and they said 2 GB. I asked if I could use an 8 GB, no it will cause problems. So I ask you, anyone adding more memory and how much?

The additional memory is only used to contain code for channels. I wouldn't add it until it complained that it needed it; the internal memory should be fine for the great majority of users.

I was having problems with it recognizing a SanDisk 8 GB, and ended up installing a PNY 32 GB without any problems at all, which per their live chat support is the maximum size.
