I am in the process of ripping my DVDs. I am using MakeMKV to generate movie only MKVs. It currently takes me about 10 or 12 minutes to process a disc. At 5 or 6 discs an hour I can see that it is going to take a very long time to process the 1800 DVDs I have.

I am interested in what kind of throughput others are getting and what kind of computing power it takes acheive it. I'm thinking it might be worth investing in a new quad core computer if it will significantly cut processing time.

Suck it up dude wink.gif Your times are pretty darned good. On a core i7 2700 machine it takes me 20 minutes on average for each movie.

Hi Crussader,

Some perspective: 10 to 12 minutes for a two-hour (average?) movie is 10 to 12 times normal DVD speed. It is also around 8 megabytes per second. You're doing pretty well, as it takes me 20 to 30 minutes per DVD.

At that speed, your bottleneck could be almost anything. It might be the top speed of your DVD reader. If you were transferring to a NAS over a 100mbps network, you would by at the limit of your Ethernet.

Run Performance-Monitor while ripping, and you should be able to tell if you are CPU-bound. But if you were, adding cores may not help, as I don't think MakeMKV is written to take advantage of multiple cores.

Thanks for the input. I had no idea if I was in a normal range or not.

(Probably a good thing I don't need a new computer since I still have a lot of storage space I need to buy.)
