Hi there. Have any of you used an Oppo BDP-103 for playing back MKV rips from an attached USB hard drive. The specs seem to show it'll work, but I'm wondering if any of you have real world experience with it. I'm in the market for a new bluray player anyway, andI want a box to play back my MKV's from. Two birds, one stone. I'm hoping you have good news for me smile.gif

I don't have personal experience, but my understanding is that the 103 will play MKV rips from USB without problems, but will not have a jukebox interface available.

So what you're saying is that if I have a drive with lots of movies it will be difficult to browse? Or impossible?

Not difficult, or impossible. Just not pretty, or searchable.

The online manual has drawings of the media browser. It is a very basic UI. Large collections would benefit from directory organization on your part.

The player is a DLNA Digital Media Renderer, so if your files are off on a server, with proper software you can push them to the player without using the player's UI at all.

As for MKV itself: it works well on local storage and over DLNA and SMB.

One drawback: PGS/SUP subtitles as used in Blu-ray are not supported. Hidef VOBSUB as produced by BDSup2Sub work, but that's a couple of extra steps to produce.

External text subtitles have in the past been limited to the extended ascii character encoding oriented to western Europe. In recent firmware UTF8 encoding has started working but is not mentioned in the release notes, so must be experimental.
