Hello, I'd appreciate some advice.... We're after a media player, with or without internal HDD storage, that we can load all of our music and videos into then playback good quality music through our stereo system, videos through the same plus the TV and access internet radio, you-tube, skype, etc. via wi-fi. We'd like to be able to control the device through our smartphones or tablet and not have to access the unit either directly or through the TV.

I've looked at WD-TV, Dune and Popcorn Hour and have become totally confused by all the options. We're not fussed if it's a $100 WD-TV or $2-300 alternative providing it does what we need.

Can anybody please help with our decision? Thank you ;-)

Doesn't exist, the best you could do is a Windows 8.1 HTPC and use something like splashtop to control the systems touch interface, that would give you the win 8 apps like Skype etc along with media playback. Microsofts own remote desktop app will disable the desktop unfortunately.

The next closest item would be an Android set top box though those are in flux at the moment, lots of unofficial Android boxes available some even with internal HDD bays but Google is reported to be finalizing an official Android TV platform with support for Chromecast but products based on that are not available yet.

The unofficial Android boxes can be controlled via Droidmote if you can get that on them, but it is still kinda messy and not all webcams are supported through Skype.

I'd say the Win 8.1 HTPC is your best option at the moment.
