I've done some reading and I do understand what it is but what I do not understand is how it is used in IPTV world and what is the advantage or disadvantage over unicast.

So I tried understanding multicast concept in a very simple iptv set up: e.g.

1. Head end providing 2 channels

2. Some middleware

3. STB

From my understanding, Unicast will stream the channels to a port and then you can simply define the link in middleware ( and watch the channel on STB.

How does this all work with multicast?

Hi, in the context of AT&T Uverse's hardware & software (IPTV powered by Ericsson's Mediaroom), if more than 1 set top box want to watch the same live channel, than the TCP/IP videostream changes from unicast (1 to 1) to 1 to many, with the video stream multicasting, the endpoints are free to ignore the data if they are not watching that channel but it scales to more than one set top box ( I have not tried more than 2 set top boxes, unlikely except perhaps Super bowl or Oscar night ).
