I am trying to find something similar to a Squeezebox I guess, but those can get pricey even older models on ebay. http://www.raspyfi.com looks like a possible solution, but is there anything else out there that I maybe looked over. I have a home audio system that is very basic. Speakers in all rooms, but it all goes back to one amplifier with only volume controls in each room. So I need a music player that has the ability to control it from a web interface because it will be sitting by the amplifier in the basement.

I believe you can do this with XBMC. I know there are apps that can be used to control XBMC headless. I just tried one out not to long ago.

From what I've seen it looks like RaspyFi evolved into http://volumio.org/ also.

You can do this with Squeezebox Server and a software player such as Squeezelite. You don't need a hardware player.

I still need some kind of hardware solution to run the squeezelite on either rasberry pi or PC... Maybe I should add it needs to be low cost and low power usage. Thanks Kneedragger for that link.

If you are leaning towards an Rpi there is Picoreplayer which works well.

Keep in mind there are myriad other software /devices to do playback via Logitech Media Server:

Community Squeeze Wandboard
Vortexbox VAMP (for plugs)
Vortexbox (headless Squeezebox server/player for a computer)
Daphile (headless server/player for a computer)
Squeezelite for osx/linux/windows
Also Android and ios devices can do playback
Squeezeplayer

All these players can be controlled via web gui of Logitech Media Server.

The XBMC route looks promising. There are a number of mini PC Android devices that have an AV out built in and come loaded with XBMC already. Yes, there are some web interface add-ins and also apps for android devices as well to use as a remote. One of these would have plenty of power to just be used for music.
