I bought one for Xmas on Amazon and have two external hard drives (both samsung), neither of which is detected by the media player.  It is connected to the internet and has the latest firmware.

on the manual it says - The media player has a USB port that supports playback from WD USB external
drives.*

I had an older model and it was never a problem.  I really hope i don't have to go out and buy a WD external hard drive as well...

thanks for any help

Of course it does. I had both bus powered and adapter powered 2.5" and 3.5" drives connected to both old and current WDTV Live without any issues.

If you are using one with a Mac and it is formatted for the Mac OS, that is one reason why that drive may not be recognized, it probably only recognizes FAT32 or NTFS.
