I have the plex app on a Samsung bluray player, Samsung TV, and AFTV, none of them provide satisfactory results.

Plex on Roku 3 is far superior to Plex on AFTV. I can not get 5.1 and the video does not fill the screen, all works fine on Roku.

I was actually going to go buy the roku box the day I found out about aft. Decided to go with aftv has it specced out better.
I was leary of the roku due to the complaints of the remote messing with your WiFi and seems like there was something else as well.
Aftv would be great for me if they would ever actually fix the plex app.

The more I use the AFTV the more I wish I would have returned it, I find midget frustrated with the UI and plex is useless. I find I go back to my Roku 3 most of the time and the AFTV will be relegated to a lightly used TV.

I'm finding that my PS4 is quicker to lock onto 1080p streams. Plus it will get the 1080p streams on some movies, like Batman Begins, that my FTV won't.

Which video streaming service?

Amazon Instant? Netflix?

On Amazon Instant it does seem to take a little time to light up the 1080P logo (even though I can see the download speed starts more than high enough). I don't have another Amazon Instant 1080P player to compare

My Apple TV pretty much always starts at Super HD 1080P on Netflix while the Fire TV takes some seconds to ramp.

For now I only use the Apple TV for Amazon Instant - where apart from the delay for 1080P to appear - it generally does a very good job.

Sorry, I was referring to Amazon Instant by default. Most movies on my Fire Tv will get to 1080p. Takes about a minute. I'm on Comcast 50/10 Internet.

Some though, like Dark Knight Rises, never make it and don't even get to HD lit up on the Fire. I was surprised to see the PS4 hit 1080p on the same movie right away.

Well on my Roku 3 last night Amazon Instant played like crap. At first it was in 1080p HD then after about 5 minutes dropped down to SD then low def after it buffered mid stream with the annoying Loading Please Wait message. I really hate adaptive streaming. When the Roku app used the dots method it never dropped quality or buffered midstream. After I watched it on the Fire TV although only the HD light only goes on it does play flawless despite the adaptive streaming crap.

I wish on these boxes you could have a setting to disable adaptive streaming and just force it to buffer. I'd rather have a start up delay than quality variance. That's a big plus still for iTunes/Apple TV.

I know what you mean. YouTube on the ATV does not use adaptive streaming so I can just pause a video and let it fully buffer unlike on other devices when it does and the video can turn from crystal clear HD to a POS low SD image even though it rarely happens to me it has happened.

Today's (5/31/14) issue of the Wall Street Journal has an excellent piece on online movie rentals, but a subscription is required. A summary follows.

HD movies from Amazon and Redbox Instant are in 720P. iTunes and Vudu are in 1080P. Vudu HDX is 1080P, 24 frames per second, while all the others are in 60 frames per second.

Redbox Instant streams in stereo, the other services use Dolby Digital; Vudu has a few titles in 7.1 surround as well.

Wayne Z, I replied to your duplicate post in the Roku 3 thread here.

Reading that article doesn't require a subscription. I don't see where he states anything about 60p for everything other than VUDU. He incorrectly implies that you will always get 24p out of VUDU when only a tiny handful of devices can output 24p and only some devices can accept and do the right thing with it.

Need help with my fire tv please!

I have an older hdtv (toshiba 51H83).  It has a dvi input with rca audio input.  I have my firetv hooked up via a hdmi to dvi cable (link) and a optical to rca converter adapter (link).  It was working and then i had to unhook it to move my television, and then when i hooked it back up the video would play extra extra slow barely moving and no audio).  After plugging in and out a bunch of times...it started to work again and be fine for days.  Then it happened again, now i cant seem to get it to work again.  I know the box is fine, I can plug it into my 32 in new tv with hdmi only and it plays perfect.  Any suggestions?

Thanks

Either way, I notice that certain content, both from Amazon and Netflix experience a weird frame rate drop, more what happens when you play content at 24fps and mess up the conversion to 30fps. Long panning shots will stutter, and quick camera cuts will flicker a previous frame. This makes some content unwatchable for me. While other content plays 100% perfectly. It doesn't affect the content 100%, some shots play through fine, while others are horrible.

I have noticed this in the Netflix app as well. I am watching Orange Is the New Black, so it's not a PAL conversion problem. 1080p, forced 60hz in the Fire TV setup, but still I am noticing a lot of judder. My Roku 2XS that it replaced didn't do this. (Instead it loved to spontaneously reboot when playing 1080p Netflix.) Scaling is off and audio bitstreaming is on.

Problems with the FireTV over the weekend. Kept returning errors playing Amazon content. (Prime or Instant). Error instructs the user to delete video from the device and clear the Instant Video app cache (which doesn't fix anything) Amazon tech support said this was a DRM error effecting a small percentage of FTVs and had me do a factory reset. Works fine now.

Amazon comp'd me a $5 Instant Video credit for the trouble and I bought Desolation of Smaug for $5.

I have 3 Roku's and 2 AFTV's, and I love the FTV's. I understand that there are some requirements for the Plex app to work well on FTV, mine are all m4v format and I get 5.1 and a great gui that everyone in my house agrees is better than the Roku. I know not everyone agrees but in my house the FTV is preferred.

With Amazon Prime Music announced yesterday, and the Amazon Cloud Music player renamed to just Amazon Music with Prime music functionality added its pretty odd that Amazon made no mention to FireTV support in their press blurb. Roku is supported, as is ATV (with a iOS device) ... but no FireTV support.

But the Amazon Music player is which will stream the tens of thousands of songs I have stored in the Amazon Cloud. Which is a heck of a lot more than the FireTV can currently do.

If you add a prime music album to your own library - is it not available on the roku ?

Perhaps you can't browse the catalog but albums you add via the web interface may show up.

The titles don't show up. At least not when I tried it on my Roku 2. I guess I should check it out on my Roku 3. If the FireTV would just add the Amazon Music player, like it should have been at launch then it would be fine.
