Looks like Amazon does not care about the Fire TV. They should have released the Amazon Music app on release date but still nothing. Why did I buy this thing?

For Amazon videos. It's certainly the best Amazon video player out there.

Me too that is why I have not uploaded my music on there yet.
With Amazon Prime Music announced yesterday, and the Amazon Cloud Music player renamed to just Amazon Music with Prime music functionality added its pretty odd that Amazon made no mention to FireTV support in their press blurb. Roku is supported, as is ATV (with a iOS device) ... but no FireTV support.
Amazon has already stated that music playing through your amazon library is already coming in the next big firmware update. They haven't had one yet so we can only assume it is getting close.

Are you getting any benefit other than XBMC icon on homescreen and ability to use USB storage?

No. Those two things are the only things different from the stock build. I am sure we'll see more stuff as people spend more time with it.

I went to buy another fireTV today since its been rooted, and Amazon offered me this deal.

You're eligible for an exclusive offer. Get Fire TV now—pay 20% at checkout, and the balance in four monthly installments. Limit 1 per customer. Learn more

I guess now poor people can even buy it.

Question if you root the Fire TV can you install the better more up to date Netflix app from the Play Store instead of the pathetic buggy 2+ year crud that is in the Amazon Store?

I believe you can already sideload the Android Netflix app w/o rooting.

Interesting. When I side loaded it I launched it and it just hung there. I'll wait till netflix updates the official app. They've already stated voice search is coming this year for it so they'll probably update then.

so with this solution, do you still have to actually exit xbmc before going into, say netflix?

or can you just go to the home screen without exiting xbmc and then run netflix?

You can launch Netflix or any other app via XBMC even w/o the XBMC home icon solution. You need to use the default Confluence skin, go to Add-ons > Programs > Android, then favorite the apps you want. Then, via a skin like Amber, add those favorites directly to XBMC's main menu. You can then launch something like Netflix, use it, and quit, and you're back in XBMC.

Well to be fair to do that on the home screen its not XBMC on the home screen right? Its another app with its icon changed that its action has been changed to launched xbmc.

You're right, and you'll still see a quick glimpse of 'Classic TV' or whatever app is being hijacked to launch XBMC. Still, a lot better than using a non-XBMC icon and/or launching via Settings > Applications.

Excellent.

Hopefully they "fix" netflix so I do not have to see the same post over and over again every 3 days.

About time. I can't wait for the feature to filter that PPV garbage so I can only see Prime content.

Looks like a "who cares?" update to me. With all the firepower this device supposedly has, where's the 3D support? How bout getting Plex to work correctly with 5.1 mkv files. Where is the update that will give Flixter HD video and 5.1 audio? And of course, when can we utilize our Amazon music library ? To borrow from Dr. Ian Malcolm.

Well to be fair, fixing Plex is up to Plex not Amazon. 3D is dead, it'll never happen and isn't even on the list of things supported. Netflix isn't even adding any more 3d content. Flixter fix is up to Flixter. So really the only thing in your complaint is Amazon music, which yeah I agree that should have been there day 1. Also fixing Netflix is up to Netflix as well.

I view just being able to see prime content separate from non-prime content as a big enough thing for this update.

If Amazon thinks 3D is dead, why are they marketing a 3D phone?

In what sense is it 3D? Are you talking about "Dynamic Perspective"? It doesn't display 3D video, to my knowledge.

3D phones have already been done. They were not very popular. I had a coworker that had one a few years ago. He always said the 3D was a waste on the phone.
